Need help dating a Model 22 45 ACP
I recently purchased a Model 22 in very nice shape and having trouble with the date of Mfg. I have looked in the S&W standard catalog and now I am confused more. Stamp on crane is 22-4 & DBX6980. 5&1/2" barrel, blue, wood grips, none shrouded ejector rod, w/lanyard ring. DBX6980 is also stamped on the bottom of the grip frame, Matching numbers under the grips and on the crane 6395. 45 ACP on the left side of barrel and S&W on the right side. 4 screw. S&W trade mark stamp & mfg info on the right side. No other markings visible without removing the grips.

Welcome to the Forum.
The M22-4 is a Thunder Ranch model. It was introduced in October 2005.

The latest SCSW was published in 2005, and the information in the SN appendix is spotty after about 2003. It may have been shipped after the book was printed; someone here may have a close one to yours and know when theirs left the factory. Hope this is helpful.

Not the Thunder Ranch model, but a new reproduction of the 1917. Should look like this (picture found via Google image search):
