Letter of Authenticity turnaround
Mailed my request for my pre-model 10 on 5/14/14 and haven't heard back yet. Is this typical?

Due to so many lettering common everyday guns there is quite a backlog leading to delays.

It takes time - the key is to watch when your check has been cashed - that is the clue it is close.

I sent mine in on 3/10. They just came back on 8/4. But, as others have said, it's definitely worth the wait!

Mailed mine on March 29th, check cashed in April so I am hopeful they will show up shortly. Good things come to those who wait. I just know that one of mine had to have been sent to the Texas Rangers and documented in a shootout with the Barrow gang at a Texas bank robbery, or not.

I have resisted the urge to sell one of the guns I am waiting on a letter for. I just know if I sell it the letter will come back as being shipped to some big wheel or having some provenance. If I hold onto the gun, the letter will read:
"Our records indicate your revolver, Pre Model 25 SN S 160xxx, was shipped with a 6.5" barrel, Patridge front sight, blued finish, non relieved walnut target stocks, to the K-Mart store in BFE America on April Fools Day 1957 and has no special meaning, value or merit. In fact, its probably not nearly worth what you paid for it. Sorry Sucker! I trust you have found this information as disappointing as you should have. Thanks for delaying the lettering of many other worthwhile and notable revolvers by making me and my staff research yours"
Kindest Regards,
Roy"
Yet, I still hold out hope and figure it cant hurt, well except to delay others.......

A little satire never hurts in this situation. Nice work giving us a little relief from a serious issue!

Just received 3 letters today (8/18/14). I mailed them on March 29th so turnaround was 11 days short of 5 months. Was definitely worth the wait. Thank you, Mr. Jinks.

What makes you say something like this? How do you know just by looking at a revolver or pistol it is a "common everyday guns". Enlighten me so I can save $50.00, please!

Don, maybe he meant more commonly seen revolvers, like model 10's and 36's....are people lettering guns other than RMs ,Third Model Targets and 38-44's ? Maybe, I don' know...
Perhaps with the increasing prices of all the P&Rs buyers have taken to documenting just to boost the value...
What do you think?
Jim

My point is, how can you tell if a "common looking" model 36 wasn't owned by the police chief in the city of Springfield MA. I saw one of his carry guns once. No engraved name or anything special, but, he owned it. Without a letter, I guess it is "common".

Maybe "frequently encountered" is a more accurate and considerate term.
But those guns that we all use to see everywhere are becoming less
frequently encountered. This new and younger group of collectors will become the guardians of our treasures when we are gone. Just a thought.

I just purchased a "common everyday" model Pre 15 Combat Masterpiece that came with the history letter. According to Roy it was one of the very early CM shipped to Evaluators Limited and shipped to Gen. George Van Orden which I believe was worth the $50.

Collectors have always lettered common guns since they were offered many years ago. One of the reasons Mr. Jinks has many more requests is there are many more collectors out there and requesting letters. Personally, I think it is a good idea to letter any S&W firearm, and well worth the expense and waiting period.
