Exclamation LET THERE BE LIGHT!!

In a recent post in the "Bekeart Models and .22/32 HFT's" thread, Hondo44 was schooling a member in finding the serial number penciled on the grips-----noting "very good lighting and magnifying glass" would lead to success more often than not.

Here it is: "very good lighting and magnifying glass"

I found this on David Carroll's desk---and ordered one as soon as I got home! (KASSOY.com)

The item number is LA 231. It's a 2X magnifier. The lens is ringed with 12 LED's. The light is SHOCKING!!! If you've ever held a gun in one hand, a magnifying glass in the other, and a sorry little flashlight in your mouth, those days are over!!

It costs $25. The UPS ground shipping is $16.(!!!) If things like that make your teeth hurt, ask them to mail it. I did----and they did.

Absolutely!! I've only had it for maybe four-five weeks, and am wondering how I ever got along without it!

A forum member asked about the size (diameter and thread count) of the front screw of the rear sight on pre-war targets. My thread gauge doesn't go that high, so off to my gunsmith I go. I handed him the screw (secured in a pin vise) and the magnifier. He scoffed at the magnifier, and asked, "What's this for?!" I told him it was for his creaky old eyes. He scoffed again. Then I showed him how the handle folds out to make a stand----and turned on the light. There was no more scoffing! I was lucky to get out of there with it! He ordered one the next day.

I almost burned down my shop with a magnifying glass mounted on a swing arm. It was mounted to the bench... in front of the window...

I came in and smelled smoke, I started looking at all the wiring, everything seemed fine, strangely it smelled like burning paper, I was just about to give up when I noticed an instruction sheet on the bench half turned to ash. The focal point from the magnifying glass had move off the sheet. It was still pretty plain what happened.

The instructions caution against just that----thus: "Please keep the magnifier covered from the sun as this can be a fire hazard."

Many, many LED-lighted magnifiers are listed on eBay. I can hardly imagine that there is such a large variety. Most seem Chinese. There are some shown having a fold-out base there also. I have a very high quality, but much older, Bausch & Lomb lighted magnifier, but the light requires you to plug it into a wall receptacle (from pre-LED days).

I would rather put that kind of money towards another S&W. I do, however, find my two magnifying flashlights invaluable. One is a pocket model B&L that takes 2 AA batteries and the other takes 2 D batteries. The pocket model goes with me to every gun show.

I carry a cheapie (unighted) magnifier I think I got at Dollar Tree or the 99 cent store to gun shows, along with a small screwdriver. Has two different lenses for different magnifications, which is sometimes helpful for looking at very tiny details. It works well enough for that purpose.

I like glass, but for the most part use cheap import loupes that I can hold w/eye as a monocle leaving hands free. I like the led, but would want a bit more than 2x. A higher power insert, on a hand held, would be a nice touch as well. Mine would need to be powered by a single AA. I avoid the triple A as the plague.

Oh yeah, I don't wanna spend more than two fins either.

I carry a small jewelers type 10X magnifier and my flex neck LED bore light to all gun shows and auctions.

Ebay has a lot of choices for these at very cheap prices. At the last gun show I attended I purchased a small loupe with a very bright LED light, which does the job.
