When S&W 38sp was made
This gun has been in family a very long time. It is still operational, even though the nickle finish has worn and it is pitted. It was last fired abt 5yrs ago by a policeman who said it was sound and still fired nicely. I am attaching a pdf with all the required info. Can you tell me when this gun was made. Thanks for any help.

In order to get a date we need to know the serial number as stamped on the bottom of the grip frame. Without that information, I will guess that it is 1920-1930s vintage.
Hope this helps.

Hi Steve - I had that info in the pdf.
Maybe this will help:
S&W 38 sp, 5" barrell, Wood grips, nickle finish,
fixed sight, hand ejector,
s/n: 527658
Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more info.

A rough guess is 1922-29. The Made in USA stamp started in 1922 and the mushroom head ejector rod was being phased out in the late '20s.
I'm sure another member here has a closer date and will respond soon.

Welcome to the Forum. Your revolver is a 38 Hand Ejector, Military & Police, Model 1905, 4th Change, shipped from the factory in 1926. The stocks look correct and the M&P appears to have original nickel factory finish.
The finish can be improved by the use of a good quality polish. I like Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish. It will remove most of the surface rust and also some of the scratches on the finish. The use of a good quality wax like Renaissance or Johnson's Paste Wax will help preserve the remaining finish.

Tks, Gary -
The top of barrel has following:
'SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA
PATENTED FEB.6.O8.SEPT.14.09.DEC.28.14'
Tks for info to help take care of it.
My older siblings (I'm only 68) remember my grandmother defending her chickens with it against foxes. : )
Again - thanks muchly.

I show nearby SNs as having been shipped during both 1926 and 1927. Shipping dates do not always track well with serial numbers, but it is reasonably certain to have been manufactured sometime in 1926. At that time, the factory called it simply a Military and Police (M&P) model.
