Default Mod 30 Hand ejector question

I have my Grand Dads I frame 32 ctg.
It has had a hard life and was found with a lot of rust on it.
I took it apart and now have it looking pretty good.
My question is did this model use a Extractor Rod Collar?
I don't remember one and of course it will not function correctly without one it seems. Any info will help greatly.
Also does anyone have an exploded view of a Mod. 30 in 32 cal?

Thanks,
Sk

Welcome to the forum.

The vintage of your gun is crucial to answer that question; some do and some don't. Some have a washer that can be easily lost that acts as a collar. There were many changes in the over 100 years that it's been made. The serial # from the gun butt or fore-strap of the grip frame and which of those places that you found the #, will tell me what I need to know to answer the question. Does it have a mushro0om shaped extractor rod knob? Dies it unscrew from the rod?

A serial # or a photo is worth a thousand words.

Also, please describe in what way it is not functioning correctly.

Beyond what Hondo44 has stated, I have an exploded view of the model 30 and 31, but posting it would probably violate the copyright rules of this forum. The view I am looking at does show an extractor rod collar (item 16), but it is for a model 30 and not for any pre-model variation.

You probably should post this question in the gunsmithing area of this forum to ask if anyone has one, or whether all .32 cylinders use the same rod collar. I do not know, but I would guess they do. I don't know exactly what revolver you have other than it's an I-frame .32. Is it stamped as Mod. 30? In any event the ejector rod collar is a simple piece, and could probably be easily made by anyone having access to a lathe (you could probably measure for needed dimensions) if a replacement part cannot be located. They are fairly cheap. Have you looked at Gun Parts (Numrich) or any of the parts houses?? Are you sure the collar is missing?

The serial number for the gun 713 xx and it has a mushroom head on the Extractor Rod and it does not appear to be able to remove it...
I was told this is an early model because of a slot in the frame where the trigger spring housing goes...
I hope this helps...

You very probably have a .32 Hand Ejector, Model of 1903, 2nd Change from that serial number. It is indeed an oldie, probably 1907-1908. Finding a collar may be a challenge. But still, one could probably be fairly easily fabricated.

I am going to go and check my work bench and see if I can find the one I lost... Not sure what it looks like though.. Don't know if it looks like an oversize washer or what?

Try a magnet. It's probably a short tube with a flange on one end. Look on the Numrich site - they have pictures of collars for various other S&W revolvers, and all look much the same

I just measured the area and it needs to be 9/32 OD and 3/16 ID but I have no idea on the length. I quickly fabricated one but it was too long at 3/16 in length. I am thinking it was just a washer.

About all you can do is cut and try until you get it to fit.

You might try with a brass rod until you get the dimensions right - much easier to work with than steel. I do that a lot.

Great idea.... Not very good with the lathe... had it for a while just never mess with it... The brass would probably last longer than me anyhow..

Your vintage 32 Hand Ejector most likely has the separate collar (large spring front retainer). If that's the case, the extractor rod can be unscrewed and pulled out from the front of the yoke.

If not, the mushroom knob must be removed and the rod pulled out from the rear of the yoke because it has an integral collar which is the large spring front retainer.

In order of assembly from rear to front:

the star, cylinder, center pin, small spring on ctr pin, large spring, collar with flange to the front, extractor rod, (or extractor rod with integral collar), yoke, mushroom knob.
