Default Australian pre Victory

Just picked up the second of three Aussie pre Victories I purchased recently. This one is serial 753353 and retains about 75%+ of its original brush blue finish. It is all matching and is in fantastic condition for an old WW2 "warrior". It has the "D (broad arrow) D" Defense Department marking with the number "289" stamped below it. Butt is marked with a "P" and there is no property marking on the topstrap. Could this be one of the 8000 pre Victories that was part of the 4/1/41 contract mentioned by Neal and Jinks on page 139? There are no FTR markings on this beauty and the condition tells why.

It could well be one of the 8,000 guns shipped to the Aussies, however only a factory historical letter can tell you for sure. Not all Aussie guns reimported to the US have the FTR stampings, and those that don't seem to be in nice original condition and therefore didn't need the rework. There's a little bit of S&W trivia about those 8,000 guns that I've mentioned on the Forum before, but since this post is about the 8,000 guns, I'll tell it again. In the first Factory letters sent out on the Victory models, the preamble part of the letter telling about the Victory Model productions, etc. said that 8,000 guns were shipped to Austria. A miss print for Australia, of course. I've often asked the Victory Model collectors if they have any of the guns sent to the Nazis. They say "Didn't Happen!" until I show them the letter! Ed.
