A friend just gave me a copy of Walter Roper's book, Experiments of a Handgunner, even though he knew that I already had a copy of it. Here's why:

Kevin
I'll swap you the same titled book, autographed from me to you.
That way when you show people the book they will know at least you. Most people have never heard of me.

Don,

Since I now have an extra, how about if I just sign it and send it to you? In fact, I'll sign Uncle Ed's name. Everybody knows him.

I don't have those kind of friends. Come to think of it, I only have friends that bust my b_ _ _ _ s.
But, I still call them good friends

Mike:

Thanks for taking the time to share your spectacular collection. I recently received the below correspondence with an old S&W that I purchased and I was surprised to see Mr. Roper's signature.

Shortly after receiving the catalog, Mr. Michael purchased a K-38 Target Model, which now resided in my collection...

You have a great friend. Tell us about the relationship between McHenry and Roper. I am sure not everyone knows. Thanks

Roy C. McHenry was a lawyer and Roper's co-author on the book, Smith & Wesson Handguns, published in 1945. McHenry was also one of the earliest agents of the Bureau of Investigation before it became the FBI. He served from 1917-1920 and then went on to serve in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice for many years.
