Richard,
Congratulations on getting that wonderful example of an engraved S&W.
That is beautiful, and I'm envious of your skill in taking pictures of your fine Smith & Wesson revolvers.

That one really flips my switch,-- Is it normal, at my age, to dream of finely Engraved, scarce S&W's, instead of beautiful women?

The detail engraving by Mr. Rentschke is flawlessly executed and candidly nicer than any of the other factory engraved guns that I own.
Richard
I hope you didn't tell that to your other factory engraved Smith & Wessons. They may decide to move back to the state where they were born. Can you take the hint?

Exquisite gun! I've never seen quite that style (especially the cylinder) and volume of coverage on other factory engraved guns.

Now that's what I call intricate. It's almost beyond my comprehension how people can do work like that by hand.

RKMesa, That appears to be an outstanding example of large English scroll. I have never seen it executed on a revolver. Such workmanship I have seen on shotguns engraved by Marcus Hunt. Thank you for sharing!

Richard,
That is magnificent, and done in such an uncommon style for an S&W.
What else do you know about it? Custom order? Pre-27, I presume?
BTW, isn't his name Rent zschke?

Why yes - yes it is. I "Ellis Island-ed" it in the original post. Thanks I'll make the edit to correct the spelling.
I don't know much more about the gun, other than it is a non-model marked 4-screw gun that was shipped in July 1959 to J.S. Oshman Inc, in Houston, TX. Perhaps it shipped in something other than the gold box, but that is the box that I had "lying around" that is now allocated to the gun.

A Couple of Answers and a Few Links
First of all - thanks for the comments and likes. In answer to the many questions on the shootability of the firearm - it has been shot. Not extensively, but if you look at the trigger, you can see the wear on some of the color case and when it came to me there were powder burns covering the face of the nickel cylinder. As to whether or not I will be shooting it - the answer is no - it takes too long to clean off the power burns from the front of the cylinder. I have plenty of other 3.5" 357's that get shot regularly and they fill my need to shoot that model and barrel length.
Since no one has posted any photos of their Rentzschke engraved guns, I'll post a few links to ones that I have found in my internet searches (some of which are housed in the great collections of forum members).
Beautiful Pre-27 with extensive inlays:
Engraved Gold Inlaid North American Big Game Special Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum Double Action Revolve
And one that I find the most interesting - a 45 SAA Colt that was engraved by S, Rentzschke and Russ Smith. (you have to click on the photos in the posting to see the detail)
Cased Custom Engraved Gold and Silver Inlaid Colt - by Rock Island Auction Company
Anyway, I would love to see other examples of Rentzsche's work and would love to know how long he worked for S&W. I know in one of the posts on this forum that there was a member who lived next door to Mr. Rentzschke. I will be shooting him a PM as it would be a great treat to speak with him about this gun and his work.

Stunning work of the highest quality; the tight scroll work, the layout, the use of space. Super nice piece.
Was he an in-house engraver, an outworker, or was this contracted out (by S&W or by request of the owner)???

I know that Siegfried Rentzschke worked for S&W. I was hoping that Bill Cross would come along and give us a bit more color (if he has some) on Mr. Rentzschke's time at S&W. Most of Rentzschke's S&W work that I have seen was done in the 1950's. I also know that he did work for Winchester as well, as that was referenced in several of the posts that I found.

No specific guess as to this gun, but I had a full coverage gun that was inlaid with gold that I was told by the engraver that it took about 90 hours to engrave. I would expect that this revolver took somewhere between 70 and 120 hours. I would love to talk with the engraver to get more specific on that.
Thanks

That has to be the most beautifully and tastefully engraved gun I have ever seen. The symmetry is exquisite the delicateness employed has me in awe. I do leather and someday hope to achieve that level of quality in my work. It is humbling to see that work of art.
Thank you for sharing with us all!

Is the engraving cut for targets or magnas? I keep wanting to see what it looks like in a nice set of diamond magnas.

That is about the finest example of engraving I have ever seen. Beautiful gun and thanks for sharing.

John:
The engraving is cut to match the target stocks (i.e. there is no engraving under the target stocks). So, it would look kind of "naked" with a pair of diamond magnas on it. It was made to be a showpiece and at the time, the smooth targets were the top of the line S&W showpiece stocks.

Here is your .357's big brother in 44 Magnum. Engraved by Russ Smith in 1959.
