Default 1926 Transitional TARGET( 1946-1949) production numbers.

There seen to be a bit of a controversy when it comes to production numbers of 1926 TARGET post war Transitional . Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson wrote that between 30 and 50 were made. Some people believe that many more were made. Did anyone ever get a chance to get close to knowing actual production numbers? I send info on mine to have it lettered. I hope I can get some more info.

I've got one rattling around in the basement. Its a 4" gun and a nice shooter. Not really all that much better than a 4" military, but you dance with what you brung. I've heard that estimate from time to time here. I guess I believe it if only because no one else has shown me anything to not believe it. I honestly believe mine started life as a 6 1/2. Not sure why. It does have the grooved grip frame, a feature you only see on factory target guns.

Maybe 10 years ago I had it at a gun show. Lee walked past, looked at the price tag and suggested I throw it away or else I might not be taking it home. Seems the paltry $5000 I was asking wasn't nearly enough.

Based on the very few of this model I have seen over the last forty-years, thirty to fifty seems like a reasonable estimate.

Hi
I keep a data base and I have 32 serial Numbers not all have been verified with factory letters. I got about 15 serial numbers from Roy that were not checked by the Invoices. That the best I can do
If any one has one that has been lettered please send me the serial number and I will check it against my data base.
Jim Fisher
Just send me a PM if you have one that letters
