Default 5" Model 1899 - 4-Digit S/N with no caliber marking on barrel

Just acquired an early 4-digit (373X) with NO caliber marking on the barrel.
The S/N matches on the barrel, cylinder and frame.

In reading the Neal/Jinks book, they mentioned that barrels with no caliber marking were typically found below S/N #50

Curious if anyone is keeping records on the 1899 Models?

Tom

Hi Tom,

I don't know if the #50 serial number was a typo or more likely, much more information has come to light since the book was written. But I suspect the latter is true and not uncommon, because many more barrels than just the first 50 have been observed w/o the caliber stamping.

My 1899 has no caliber markings and it is above 5000. My 1899 Navy marked gun had caliber markings on the barrel.
