New to Me, .38 Model 1905 4th Change
Picked this one up from an on-line auction at a great price.
It has a 5" barrel and a serial number of 5770XX. Guessing this to be from about the early 1930's and in about 70% appearance condition. Locks up tightly and is in great mechanical shape. All #'s match to include the walnut grips.
I have it next to my Model 10-5 with a 4" barrel in one of the pictures.

Nice! I've got one too...never have shot it. Neat little gun though.

I think you needed to post this in the hand ejector column. But if those grips are numbered to the gun it is from the 1920s.

577048 was shipped in Dec. 1927 and was part of a shipment of revolvers to the "Springfield Police Dept." and so marked on the back strap. Your gun was probably shipped about the same time period. Ed.

Thank you, It is within 20 revolvers of the one you provided the serial number. Therefore, it must be earlier than I thought.
I can find no markings on the back strap. The face of the cylinder, the butt and the inside of the right grip (looks to be in pencil) are marked with matching serial numbers. Its serial number is slightly higher than the one you referenced.

The grip style on yours was of the type used by S&W throughout the decade of the 1920s. It's good you can see the SN penciled on the back. Those I have seen from that period do not have visible SN markings. FYI, at that time S&W called it just the Military and Police (M&P) Model.

Thank you DWalt and roaddog28.
The pencil marking on the inside of the right grip is barely legible. I think if it were not for knowing the serial number it would be difficult to decipher.

Thank you Wiregrassguy, I grew up deep in the wiregrass (Dothan) in the 50's/60's prior to Uncle Sam calling for Nam fodder and my many years working for DoD. Finally able to retire back to the Heart of Dixie.
