Both beautiful examples of '50s Smiths from back in the day!
I believe the Pre 27 was the only model to have the "Bright Blue" as standard back in the early 1950s, and optional at a premium on every other model!

The bluing on both of your examples looks amazing to me, and I would assume that the bluing method was the same for both guns during that time period. Am I correct?

The hot oven or carbona blue process was used by S&W until mid-1980. It is the polishing step that results in a bright blue finish (or standard blue). Having looked at guns from the 30s through the 70s, I believe the best polish was done from late 1955 to around 1957. The first year (1956) 44 Magnums and Combat Magnums have the best polish/finish I have ever seen on a S&W handgun.

Bill,
Are you counting the Triple Lock finish in your comparison? After the turn of that century when it was the flagship of S&Ws revolver line, don't you think good surviving examples of its mirror polish and carbona blue rival those of the mid century?

Jim...I have owned several T-Locks and don't remember the finish being bright blue, but that was some time ago.

I would say that my .41 Magnums from the mid 60's have some of the best Factory Bluing I have seen, especially the first Year 1964 Guns. The bluing paired with the Velour lined Presentation Cases was an incredible combination.

If you look at the pictures closely, there is a tiny hint of pink coming off the Pre 27 at certain angles -- in the bright light.. You can see it best in the second picture and last picture.
