The range for those is 1948-1951 (C1-C223998) - just doing some extrapolating I'd guess a 1948/49.

A little more detail would help - pictures too.

It is likely chambered in .38 S&W Special so you have a .38 Military & Police (M&P) model revolver. . . or sometimes called a pre-Model 10 since it was assigned that model number in 1957.

The M&P is what I think of as the signature model of Smith & Wesson and was widely used by law enforcement, the military and civilian self-defense during the 50s and 60s. If properly cared for it is extremely reliable and handles well even for inexperienced shooters.

If you only own one Smith revolver, the M&P or Model 10 is THE one to own.

C 57006 would date your M&P's shipment as probably September-October 1949. As it has the new short action, it is called a pre-Model 10 M&P by collectors. The Model 10 nomenclature was adopted by S&W in 1957, and is essentially the same gun.
