Default Photos of Model 1917 Revolvers

I'm searching for photos of personnel armed with M1917 S&W and Colt revolvers from either World War. Even holstered revolvers will do. Also need photos of Brit/Canadian soldiers or RCMP armed with Colt New Service.

If you can help me out please contact me or post them here.

Many thanks.

Hello,
I suppose google is your friend on some of that. The RCMP pic's will be difficult as they carried these revolvers in a flap style holster so the actual revolver will not be seen when carried.

US military holsters for the M1917 were also of the flap type, and the same holster was used for both the Colt and S&W versions of the M1917. You would have to find pictures of a soldier with a revolver in hand to determine which it was. At one time, I had a great posed 8X10 picture from the 1930s of a large group of Army officers, all wearing M1917s in holsters hanging from Sam Browne belts. But all you could see were the holsters, not the revolvers in them. The "Official" carry was butt forward on the right side.

I will make a suggestion. There are numerous military bases, most of which have on-base museums, and many of those have extensive photo archives going back many years. Here in town is Fort Sam Houston (now Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston), and they have a great museum with artifacts going back to the Indian War days. Similar museums exist at Fort Sill, Fort Bliss, etc., dating back to well before WWI. I have been provided with copies of early period photos of early machine guns in use at no charge (but I got them in person from the FSH museum). You might try the route of contacting the curators of those museums.

Here are a few of the many scans I got from the Fort Sam Houston Museum:

M1904 Maxim Machine Gun on Mule

Weapons captured from Villistas (Note M1895 Browning and M1909 Benet-Mercier MGs)

M1904 Machine Guns on Inspection

Here's one someone else posted some time back. It was taken "Somewhere in France" circa 1918. I don't remember who posted this so I can't give him any credit:

This was true for WW1. The revolver was issued to Cavalry who's primary sidearm was still the sword. The sword would be in the right hand and the revolver would be cross-drawn with the left hand. It could still be drawn fairly easily with the right hand if needed.
When the 1917s were re-issued in WW2, the same style flap holster was used, but it was traditional right side, butt backward.

Default Picked this old postcard up in an.............

...........antique shop and didn't look too closely, thinking they were 1917s Smith or Colt.

Got home and took a closer look and think they might be Colt .38 special of the 1890s family.

Nice image though.

That's a motley looking crew of MP's! Brown boots, black boots, shoes, pants dragging in the dirt, gloves, no gloves, caps at all angles. But at least they all have the mandatory sunglasses.

I hope that the MG they are awaiting is in a good mood.

My only thought is that they must be reservists or NG that were issued whatever extra obsolete or 'substitute standard' equipment that was available in order to guard some stateside airfield. The two on the left wearing 'slacks' have the holster leg laces just hanging and blowing in the wind. I assume the guys wearing 'slacks' and the guys wearing cavalry 'breaches' have different assignments or responsibilities. Maybe they patrolled on motorcycles or even horses? Just my wild guesses.

Hope this one will help - a doughboy somewhere in France during WWI with his holstered S&W M1917.

There are a number of things about this picture that bother me. It appears that the MPs are wearing Marine emblems on their overseas caps; however, those caps have piping that IDs them as US Army. They are wearing sunglasses in formation, which is usually a big no-no. The boots and shoes are not matching, as was mentioned. Plus, the picture is in color, which DID exist, but was not common.

Are we sure this still isn't from a movie or TV program?

How about this, Gil. Look at the belt buckle on the third man from the left (corporal?). He is wearing a General Officer's pistol belt unless I am mistaken.

Some of the chevrons look Army yellow; others look Marine forest green.
