44 Magnum factory engraved in an "oak leaf and acorn" pattern by Russ Smith and shipped in 1963. It is one of the few engraved in this pattern. Click on the photo for a better look.

Thumbs up Oak Leaves and Acorns...

Bill:

I think that that is the 1st time I have seen that oak leaf beauty. I have to ask - does it have another side you might share with us?

As always - Thanks for sharing.

Bill - Thanks for posting the JFK model 19! IIRC, it was never delivered, right? That gun is amazing. Can you post your Alvin White engraved 44 magnum which has service stocks because the engraving on the frame was done for service stocks? I remember it having a beautiful animal motif.

Richard - thank you for showing that Rentzschke 357 - does it get much more ornate, wow! Your engraved collection is great - in fact, the only gun I think you are missing is a class A engraved combat magnum by LeBlanc

Morgan - very nice 29-2, N50000. That one is different in many ways than the other guns of this thread. I like it a lot

All - I never heard of Dan Cullity - can anyone tell me about him?

Default One More...

The clean and classic execution of the engraving on this long-tube 29-2 make it one of my favorites - And, I just love the 8.375" "canvas" for engraving art. I also love all of the "open space" on the barrel.

Repost of one I showed before:

Model 57 S237459. Engraved and inlaid by John Pease for the S&WCA 2014 Symposium and the 50th anniversary of the 41 Magnum. Also included are photos of Mr. Pease's original drawing, Bill Cross' letter and a framed print that the engraving was based upon (Alaskan Autumn by Charles Fracé)

This is some factory work undoubtedly done by Harry Jarvis. The revolver was shipped on May 1, 1953 to the Smith & Wesson Sales Department,Advertising Account. It was shipped with an 8 3/8" barrel, target hammer,Class A engraved, blue finish, and smooth rosewood presentation grips. There is no information available about how this revolver was used by the Sales Dept. or if it was a gift for a special person.
It's a 357 Magnum by the way.

Beautiful work and I would agree that it was done by Jarvis. I love your cases - where do you get them done?

I have been on the hunt for a long-tube factory engraved early post war 357, but alas, I have been unsuccessful in adding one to my stable. So, if you ever tire of that beauty, let me know.

Thanks for sharing,

Richard,
The cases are made by Marvin Huey of Kansas City. He does exquisite work. I know Bill Cross loves his work.

Different in various ways from most shown here but mostly as my DIY project, Ca. 1982 I bought this TL at a OK City gun show for $135. I already had the ivorys from working in Africa 1951.

Not factory done and pales next to the presentation pieces on display by the serious collector folks but here is my one and only engraved S&W.

Here it is in the El Paso rig I had made for it. Unlike the presentation guns pictured in this thread this 10-5 has been a working gun its whole life and continues to be carried and used.

Gorgeous guns.

Does anyone know who at the factory was engraving in June, 1981?

Here's a five screw, first year shipped, factory Class A engraved, 44 Magnum. It may have been engraved by Virginia LeBlanc who mentored under Harry Jarvis. We'll never know for sure unless the 50's records are digitized by the SWHS. I don't know if the historical records would even tell you anything about who the engraver was.

Bill...I believe your 44 Magnum was engraved by Virginia LeBlanc (as is my nickel 44 Magnum shipped in October 56). Some of her work has a vl or vlb stamped on the left side of the grip frame.

I have looked at many invoices from 1956 and there were no engravers identified on any of them.

Bill

I just got the letter back from Roy (see below). Roy believes that Tom Freyburger cut the gun. However, about a year ago, I sent photos to Tom and he did not recall cutting it (Note: Tom has had a couple of major health issues, and my guess is that he does not recall as well as he once did...)

The gun really is very nicely engraved and is one of my favorites. Here's a couple of detail shots:

Thank you, Richard.

That is some superb scroll work. The geometric and technical precision of those cuts is outstanding, and I'm damning that fine work with faint praise!

Those just beginning to appreciate fine engraving and those accumulating finely engraved pieces are well advised to study this work.
It is what you are looking for.
It should be what you want.

I'll relay a story I heard so long ago, I'm foggy on the source.
I honestly can't remember whether an engraver told me this, whether I read it, or whether it was told to me about an engraver, but the validity holds, the source notwithstanding--

When a certain Master Engraver would be approached by someone wanting to apprentice under him, or merely by someone seeking advice on pursuing the trade, he always started the discussion the same way. He simply placed a piece of paper on a table, handed them a pencil, and said
"Draw me a round circle."
If they could draw a round circle, he would discuss it with them. If not, he would advise them to pursue another vocation, and maybe even another avocation.

I can't get very interested in scroll engraving with bumps, lumps, and corners on the scrolls. Once you've seen the good stuff, the lumpy stuff just won't do.
That gun is the good stuff.

I'm not implying these other beautiful pieces are not fine work.
This is just such a great 'study guide' for fine scroll work without the distraction of inlays and other types and patterns.

Default Engraved S&W Model 19

Thought I would jump in & show my engraved S&W model 19. I carried a Model 19 for 20 years of my 23 year career in the Border Patrol. IMHO, this is one of the best LE sidearm ever produced. Although the government would not allow me to keep my sidearm, I promised myself to purchase another and have it engraved. I fullfilled my promise. The revolver was engraved by John Pease and the grips are by Keith Brown. It now rests in a walnut case w/ green (what else) fabric. Very impressive.

Wow! What is the cost of some if these fine pieces? I would guess they are mid to upper 4 digit?

I am always intrigued the way Mr. Smith moved the S&W logo around on the frame of many of the revolvers he engraved.

This 29-2 was Class C engraved and shipped in 1966 and it is the only known 44 Magnum with a factory 7 1/2-inch barrel. (click on the photo for a better look)

I've seen Russ cut the logo there on lots of guns, but that is the 1st time I have seen him cut the "R" (registered) in the 4:00 area as well. Very nice touch.

I had an extra set of KB Ropers setting around - I thought they looked mighty fine on this nickel 29-2...

Needing an engraved gun fix. So I thought I'd send this to the top in hopes that someone else will post one of their engraved beauties...

Default Oscar Young in the house!

Here is a neat one one I got since the thread was started. If not for dear Richard bumping this thread up, I may have forgot to share it

Its an Oscar Young engraved 38 New Departure 4th model. The previous owner first offered me the gun over a year ago, un-lettered, and I thought he wanted too much at that time. He finally listed it online a while back as a no reserve auction, and I won it! Then I lettered it

I am starting to really get into the older engraved stuff but I definitely appreciate the talent of the engraver first and foremost, regardless of era.

Everyone - excellent engraved guns!!! This is a great thread!

Default Harry Javis Combat MASTERPIECE

Added this one at the Baton Rouge SWCA symposium. Bought the steer head ivories there too and matched them up. The Combat masterpiece was wearing non matching magnas.

Additional information on this revolver from the factory letter.
"SN K107136 shipped to Jurek Brothers Inc., Greenfield, MA on June 26, 1951. Part of an 8 gun shipment, all in the same configuration. Engraving done after it was delivered to the distributor."

and a quote from Pace40 in the 2009 thread on this same gun .... " I only know of one other gun where his full name is on it but don't know if that lettered or not. Another interesting item is that Jurek Bros was a stones throw from the factory and Jarvis' home. Not out of the realm of possibility they just drove it there for the work."

I wish I knew who engraved the 1950 .44 Target model. Any ideas out there?
