One of my favorites - an early Model-marked 29 engraved by Russ Smith. [5/9/19 UPDATE: This beauty is now sharing safe space with a bunch of rare 44's in another fine collector's safe. I expect that he will enjoy it as much or more than I did during the time it was in my stewardship...]

Default My First, A Model 60 With Matching Knife

My first engraved revolver and matching knife I got 34 years ago. I added a second revolver, a pre-Model 27, engraved for me by the same engraver back in 1990.

Default My engraved S&W revolvers

Here are my engraved S&W revolvers. A humble group compared to many other engraved S&W collections...

First is an engraved WWII Victory model in 38 spl. General Richard J. O'Keefe had this revolver engraved by an unknown German engraver "A. Reich" after WWII. I bought it last year from his son, who the General had the revolver engraved for.

Here is the thread, if you wish to read more about it:

Major General Richard J. O’Keefe’s S&W Victory model

Second is this 1903 first change target that I found out was factory engraved by Oscar Young. It has been refinished, but I love having a gun that someone in the Young family did.

Factory engraved 1903 first change target AND it’s likely the work of Oscar Young!!!

And finally, my factory engraved combat magnum (pre 19). This gun was done by Virginia LeBlanc. She actually signed the revolver.

You can read more about it here:

Well Guys, everyone of these is special and you have posted really fine photos of some beautifully engraved examples of the engraver's art. I appreciate your sharing them with us. Oh yes Doc, the front sight on your M-60 is "Out Of Sight", a very unique and interesting work! Again, thanks to all!

Some of these remind me of old covers on, "Argosy" or, "True" men's magazines. Anyone recall those?

The barber shop my dad and I went to back in the early- to mid-fifties had stacks of the things. I was already reading beyond my grade school level, and I was enthralled by some of the stories, artwork, and photographs. In my little kid mind, I wanted to be some of the characters in those old pulp stories.

It does, doesn't it? But at least it has a capital "L", although an exclamation mark wouldn't hurt to really drive the point home.

I am not a fan of engraved stainless - but how can you not LOVE this gun?

I love this thread. Expect to see it in the Ampersand tomorrow.

Richard...the pattern on the side plate of the ".357" is the only one like it I have seen. It is very unusual.

The side plate on my Jarvis engraved 3 1/2 two-tone is also rather unusual but not nearly as ornate as the Willig engraved gun.

In 1957, Rex Firearms in NYC considered this factory engraved (by a contractor in Germany) 44 Magnum the finest revolver they had seen.

A modest example of S&W factory engraving when compared to some of the above spectacular ones. However this was originally shipped to a client in Arizona per the factory letter and I like it.

I think that these are the photos you were talking about? At least one of these (the blued one) was confirmed to be engraved by Russ Smith. The engravers on the pintos have not been confirmed, but several knowledgeable sources have postulated Russ Smith, Harry Jarvis, or even Virginia LeBlanc.

Default Wondering

What awesome skills these engravers have. I too can't even envision what it take to complete such a task. Let me ask these 3 questions about the Claus Willig engraved model 19, if I may.

1. What would that Model 19 be work today in perfect condition without the engraving?

2. If you had to throw a number at what that engraving would cost today?

3. Finally, what value do you place on it today as engraved?

Just curious and envious. A beautiful collection. I see more beauty in these fine guns than I guess others see in a Rembrant.

Those above are so nice I'm almost embarrassed to post mine. Here is one that I actually got from eBay when it first started (before they banned handgun sales). Lew Horton Distributing Model 29 shown here above a 329:

Being new to Smith & Wesson's I have the same questions. I'm looking at my 586 and my model 10 (no dash) and am wondering if it would be worth having them engraved.

I've posted this before. Apologies for the repetition. This is an
German engraved Victory Model, presented to an outgoing Commander of a US Army unit in Germany.

Great guns guys! I have a few requests, if I may.

Bill - can you post pics and a brief synopsis of the JFK/Presidential engraved model 19 / combat magnum?

Richard - how about some pics of the Rentzschke 357 you have - I remember how detailed and intricate the engraving is. The craftsmanship is amazing....

Late to the party as well, but I'll post a couple over the next few days maybe.

Dan Cullity engraved/inlaid (and signed '77) 29-2, serial N50000. Hope you enjoy the photos - still new to this light box thing.

Combat Magnum, K260003, the first one of this model completed on December 15, 1955. Kept in the factory collection and in 61 shipped to Alvin White for engraving and gold inlay. The shipping log indicates "present to JFK". There is a gold shield on the bottom of the trigger guard with the initials JFK engraved on it. The ivory stocks were also made by Mr. White and feature gold S&W monograms, escutcheon, and stock screw. Click on the photos for a better look.

Bill

Jim:

Here you go...

Rentzschke engraved 357 Pinto shipped to Houston, TX in 1959. This is a non-model marked 4-screw 357 - the only one that I have seen (perhaps it just missed the model stamping process...). This revolver at one time or another has been in collections of some notable collectors, several of whom regularly frequent this forum. It is one of my favorite engraved guns - I love the detailed scroll work, that is much more impressive when you have it in your hands and I am pleased to have wrangled it into my stable of engraved pintos.

I always thought that with the N50000 SN that it might have been shipped, set aside to be shipped to, or engraved for someone of note. The small roll mark on the left side was also an indication that it was a special gun destined for someone/something special. I love the engraving (along with the addition of the beautiful ivories) and would love for you to post some more photos of the rest of the engraved areas when you get a chance. BTW- nice job with the light box. I eagerly look forward to photos of more of your collection.

Thanks for sharing,

I'll try to get a few more photos in a few days. I've never lettered the gun, but as I understand it will letter as a 27-2, not a 29-2. I'm sure there are two with the same serial number, and I agree that the small roll mark and serial are interesting. Thanks for the compliments on it!

In response to RKMesa's post:

That's incredible work -- really makes you go "Wow" ... I wonder what Claus Willig charges for something like that and how do you get him contracted if he's living in Germany? Unbelievable work ... AUSGEZEICHNET as they say over there ...
