Circle P Factory Rework Stamp?
I haven't had a chance to clean and post pictures of the one I bought last week and another one has already followed me home. This one is a 4" nickel .38 M&P 4th Change from the early '20's. It has a star on the butt and a 1.47 date on it. It also has a P in a circle near the date stamp and in the barrel lug. I've read that a B in a diamond indicates a factory reblue. Does the P in a circle mean anything? I'll get pictures up this weekend.

Circle P is the symbol for nickel plating, typically a refinish in nickel for that particular part.

Thank. I was hoping it had to do with the nickel. The nickel is in excellent condition. I'll get picture posted as soon as I get a chance to clean it up some.

N for nickel plate is the most common marking. But occasionally we do see the P in a circle for plated. Can also be used for silver or gold plated. Or S or G in a diamond for silver or gold plated. Depends on the time period and/or workman doing the stamping.

Got it cleaned up over the weekend. I bought it from an individual who said he had had it for 45+ years. He said he had not shot it in over 40 years. He said the original grips were damaged when he got it so he installed the plastic grips. I've got to find some correct magna grips with the diamond.

The butt has the star on it.
The frame had a 1.47 date and the circle P.
The bottom of the barrel has the circle P. There's not a B stamped here so maybe it was originally nickel.
There is also a circle P on the cylinder under the extractor star.
The serial number on the yoke also matches.

They look decent but don't fit correctly. They fit a later model 10 just right.

Forgot to add that from the SN I think it's from the 1922-1923 time frame.
