Default PRE- MODEL 36 MARKINGS

Today I came across a nice PRE-MODEL 36. It is a 38 spl w/ 2" barrel. the sn# is 60278. IT also had some numbers stamped on the rear of the grip frame. P.O. Dept 22693. Does anyone have a clue what these numbers designate?. I thought perhaps Post Office, but I am only guessing. There must be someone who knows or has seen this before and knows their meaning. Would these numbers add or detract from the value? Thanks in advance for any input on this subject. Thanks - Bill

A little Googling may hold the answer for you.

It could add to the value if you can identify the marking to the post ofc.

The U.S. Postal Service was once officially called the U.S. Post Office Department, and they did issue firearms to some inspectors. I'd think it might be realistic to think that the gun in question could have been issued by that department.

A quick search revealed that 22693 isn't a valid U.S. zip code, so possibly an issue number? Hmmm....

Any suggestions where I can search for Post Office marked chief specials. Is there an official listing of the guns ordered by the post office somewhere or would I have to get the gun lettered ? Thanks BILL
