I just bought a 5 screw, 38, 5" barrel, fixed sights, with a lanyard. The grips are of the style I have seen posted here on some hand ejectors 2nd and 3rd model. It is in 90% condition or better. The s/n lacks a letter prefix and is 8584xx. I paid $500. Any idea as to model, dob or value?

You have provided only scanty information to make an ID, but what you probably have is a pre-WWII M&P, probably chambered in .38 S&W (making it a pre-Victory), and from the SN, from around late 1941. You haven't said much about its condition, but I'd say $500 is on the far high end of what it's worth. How about a picture and more information?

Is it a .38 S&W or a .38 S&W Spl? With a 5" barrel I would guess the former. The serial number, with no prefix, makes it sound like a .38/200 British Service Revolver IF a .38 S&W. But if it's a .38 S&W Spl, the it's a .38 M&P Model 1905 4th Change. Please let us know the exact caliber. Either way it's probably a 1940-41 manufacture and sounds like a nice find.

And pictures also help

Then it is probably a civilian M&P. Civilian revolvers were still being made and sold then, but not for long. Grips should be checkered wood with diamonds around the screw holes and with small silver medallions. The SN should be on the back side of the right grip panel if the grips are original. Does it have the original box?

no box, sorry no pictures yet. It has the type of grip that the medallions are at the top of the grip and is rounded on top.
