Default Model 1955 five screw

Came upon 1955 five screw 45 acp in 96-97% condition. Has a set of non-relieved diamond targets which I believe are correct though they are numbered differently than the gun. The gun appears to have been manufactured in 1955 and according to the Standard Catalog was produced in the five screw configuration for only one year. No box or tools.
Since it appears to be rather unusual I have no idea what a reasonable price is. The asking in $1,000. Good or bad deal.

That is about what I paid for my pre-25 a year ago, also with non relieved targets. The stocks alone are pretty pricey. Mine shipped in 1958, and also in high condition.

In that condition, I believe it is right on target for price. Not cheap, not overpriced. If you want it get it, as you won't fine another very easily.

Depending on where you live I have seen these in that condition go for $1500. Sounds like a good deal.

I'm assuming the gun is in Cal. and I've heard horror stories about that place pertaining to gun prices. I'd say its reasonable at the asking price but I'd have to ask how flexible is that price?

The Pre 25's are very undervalued in my opinion.I have watched nice Ones sell for $1,000 on GB.With NR Diamond Targets selling for $300+ it makes no sense. My Pre 25 is One of my favorite Guns and is extremely accurate. They should be $1,500+ Guns in my Book.

Question

Buy that gun! I've paid more than $1k for both of mine 10 years ago. As mentioned by others, the stocks are easily worth $300. on Ebay. I take it you've had the stocks off since you mention they're numbered. Target stocks aren't usually numbered, magnas are. Did you notice the mainspring? Normal or W-shaped?

Unless there is something wrong with it that is a great price, you certainly can't buy something new that is that nice for that price.

That sounds like a very fair price, you should probably get that one. Mine also has non-relieved target stocks that are numbered to a different revolver.

My Pre 25 also has NR Targets numbered to a different Gun.I wonder if S&W just gave up and did not bother matching them up?

Default good deal

I would think that would be a very good deal. I have one and love shooting it. I have a good supply of .45 Auto Rims and reload those.

Condition, condition, condition--its worth more because you can't expect to replicate something that old that's that nice.

Bob,

I live in California also and I think that it is a fair price for that handgun.
If you pass on it, if it is not spoken for, please PM me where it is and I would be interested in purchasing it at that price. For information, this handgun is not covered by the California Safe Handgun Roster as it is over 50 years old which exempts it........ Good Luck on it......

I would say these prices are closer to the prices being asked at gun shows. S&Ws seem doomed to be priced below Colts without reasonable explanation.

Default 5 screw

The price is very fair for what it is. I have owned two of these at different times. Highly collectible and super shooters. These have a different main spring.

I have both four-screw and five-screw variations of the pre-25. They are fantastic revolvers.

Not always. S&W was trying different mainsprings and no captive rebound springs. They used U shaped and W shaped mainsprings that also powered the rebound slide. These springs didn't always work, so many of them have had the mainsprings replaced with the standard one.

It's resting peacefully in the safe after being well exercised. In addition to being a beautiful revolver its really a lot of fun to shoot.
Thanks to all for the great input.
