Default Help ID a M1917

I just joined the forum and could use some help identifying a M1917. According to the serial number (165948), it was manufactured in Feb 1919. It does not have the flaming bomb on the left side in front of the hammer. It does have a proof mark on the right side in front of the trigger guard, but all of the M1917 that I have seen have the proof marks on the left side. It does have the U.S. Property under the barrel. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could tell me if this gun was issued to the US Army or any other information that may help decide if I should but it?

That's a great looking gun. Looks too good to have been issued, in my opinion. From what I've seen, 1917's that were issued normally have U.S. Army stamped in the bottom of the grip, and have been selling for upwards of $1000. Other members on here will be able to chime in with info about the serial number and other markings. If you think the price for this one is reasonable compared to the range I mentioned, I would go for it. Good luck with the purchase!

Whether it was issued or not I can't say, but the war ended in 1918, so it did not see service in the First World War. Likely it was sold off as surplus after the war and someone got a like new revolver at a bargain price.

It sure looks nice. I would have to know the asking price to say whether I would be a buyer or not.

Welcome to the Forum.

That is a beautiful 1917. The picture of the lanyard loop is a good example of the case hardened version from the WW I era. Later WW II Victory model loops were usually a Parkerized type finish or blue.

Excellent looking 1917. Yep, the markings are very crisp. That one would be a nice addition to any collection.
Good pics also by the way.

My mom was manufactured in Feb 1919 and on the 19th no less. I was born on 9-9. I think 9 may be a family lucky number.

If the gun is in the $300 to $800 range grab it.
