SN 925xx was likely shipped around mid-1920. At the time, S&W would have called it the Military and Police (M&P) Model, having dropped the Model of 1905 terminology prior to WWI. Some collectors still use the Model of 1905 terminology. In 1922, the barrel caliber stamping was changed to .32-20 from .32 WCF.

Default 1905 hand ejector 32 W C F

thank you,
i appreciate the information.my forte is in colt & winchester firearms, and while i have an exhaustive library on both,i have
nothing on S&W i have met Mr. Jenks but do not have his book.
i spent some good $$$ and bought 2 George Lawrence holsters
one extensively tooled and leather stitched marked for the 32
by S & W model and bbl length the other an earlier version with a single tooled border, but marked for the 38 (the revolver fits it well), both are in near to new condition.

We'd love to see pictures of both the gun and Lawrence holsters.

As you may be aware, the K-frame revolvers prior to WWII were made in both .38 Special and .32-20. However, they were separately serial numbered even though they were essentially identical except for chambering. Relatively few in .32-20 were made, only about 145,000. Production ceased in about 1929-30, but the .32-20 revolvers continued to be cataloged and sold until about 1940, these being those finished revolvers remaining in inventory or assembled during the 1930s from remaining parts. There has been one reported as being sold in 1946. They were slow sellers. Colt also offered several of their revolver designs in .32-20 (notably the Army Special, the Official Police, and the Police Positive Special, in addition to the single-action revolvers, the SA Bisley Model being very popular in that caliber), but they also threw in the towel prior to WWII. Far more in .38 Special were made, but there does not seem to be much of a current value premium attached to the far scarcer M&Ps chambered in .32-20. This is perhaps because .32-20 ammunition is somewhat difficult to find and quite expensive.

I'm wondering when the Model 1905 usage actually fell out of use. My Schoverling, Daly & Gales catalog from 1915 still offers it as such (no "of" by the way, as collectors like to say it; S&W doesn't seem to have used the little preposition, at least going by my 1903 S&W catalog where the Model 1902 and Model 1903 are listed).

I don't know the exact time, but probably around 1915-1916, essentially contemporary with the beginning of the 4th change. Note here: Found a M&P Target in the Box .... Lots of pictures that the box label does not use the "1905".

Wood grips without medallions were used during the 1920s, and also prior to 1911 (but not the same design). The 1920s grips were convex on top, the earlier ones were flat or slightly concave. Gold medallions were used in between.

thank you.
that clarifies the date for the pearl grips i have on it as they have the flat concave top as opposed to the convex top on the wood grips that came on the revolver
