Bring down a polar bear with a single shot.
All questions in all bear threads are now conclusively answered. The answer is always 357!

Fake Ad!
According to the interwebz and big glossy gun magazines, big game can ONLY be taken with huge bore handguns shooting super-heavy, hard-cast lead LFP slugs or jazzy all-copper hollowpoints with plastic tips. A standard-weight, soft-swagged lead SWC is only good for ground squirrels...

That ad makes me want to buy another one!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing.

Beautiful!
Why do current production hunting revolvers look like they came off a space ship?

" ... not scheduled for immediate production ..."
This makes sense if the ad is circa 1946 as stated earlier. Production of arms for the civilian market was suspended during the war and the transition back no doubt took some time.

Excuse me, but there are no polar bears that live anywhere near whitetail deer country. So this one is presumably a black or grizzly bear. Since it has no hump at the shoulder blades, I guess it is supposed to be a blacky . . .
And yes, I'm aware that it mentions polar bears in the text.

It's good wherever big game runs wild.

Another clue that it is not an early pre war ad is the mention of the"full 8 3/8" barrel". Early ones were available with an 8 3/4" barrel.

As to the power of a .357 Magnum, remember that ammo makers have greatly downloaded the cartridge. Back in the day, it was 158 grain LSWC at 1,510 fps. Current Magnum loads are not all that much hotter than the 38/44 of 1930/1931.

Here's a similar period piece angling for a different perspective:

Even with the old hot load it was still less than half of a 30-30 Winchester load (150 gr bullet @ 2,390 ft/s, 1,903 ft·lb). Even a 30-30 would not give me much confidence on the game mentioned in the OP.

I agree. I believe the ad at least implies that you may want to keep the revolver close by for emergency use / surprise encounters " wherever big game runs wild".
" ... 1510 foot-seconds muzzle velocity ... "
In the days before widespread availability of chronographs, velocity claims were sometimes "very optimistic".

I love the example about the bank robbery. They definitely had a different perspective back then.
Over penetration? You talk like that's a bad thing.

You will note that nowhere in the account does it say the shooter was a LEO.
Nor is any time spent hand wringing about whether the fleeing felon was armed or not!
