Looks Like C56006?

One of these is C56793 and shipped 7/13/49. The other is C58650 and shipped 5/17/49. Yes, the one over 2,000 higher in serial shipped almost two months earlier. I added the stocks. Both were wearing post 1968 wood when I got them. No idea if either or both had the same stocks yours has.

C56006 is correct

I had done a search on these when I was lookin for one and it appears that they were shipping with both pre war and diamond magna stocks at about the same time.

Does anybody know if that's the case?

First question is do the grips number to the gun ?
Can you post a pic?

While I dont follow the M&P evolution IIRC only the early post war 1946 shipped SV or S serial prefix long action guns had the pre war style Magna grips ?

Then again most of the ones I have seen are square butts .

The grips do number to the gun. I'll see about some pics later or tomorrow.

This is C56630 which was lettered as shipping in September 1949. As far as I can tell, still the same as the day it left the factory only showing some wear and tear. Just like me cuz I left the factory the same month.

Round butt stocks are all over the place on the postwar Military & Police revolvers. Some shipped with hard rubber round butt stocks; some with 1930s style walnut round butt medallion stocks (like the OP's); others with the "new" round butt Magna stocks. I've seen all combinations. But, it seems to me I've seen more with either black rubber or the 1930s style than with Magnas, when the stocks number to the gun or are confirmed by a factory letter. My guess is they had a lot of the 1930s types hanging around after the war, and, unlike the square butt prewar Magna, they did not run out early in 1946.
I know there is an official letter floating around out there that says definitively that there were no prewar Magna stocks at the factory when the war ended, but the predominant stocks shipped on the earliest S prefix guns were clearly the prewar style. They shipped pretty consistently up to the S815xxx range with a few examples in the S816xxx range.

No one mentioned the squiggle "Speed" hammers. Those mean they had short actions, used only from 1948, I think.

Earlier guns were basically like pre-war ones: long actions and prettier hammers.

Yes. All the C prefix guns had the "high-speed" hammer (short action). The long action disappeared late in the S prefix series.

Got this one a year ago. . .C166XXX. . .maybe around 1950. The pawn shop owner and I debated over whether somebody had cut off the barrel. You see so few of these older ones and the little barrel looks so odd, at first you wonder about it. As a result I got it pretty cheap.

Nice 2" M&P, the early post war "C" serialized round butt guns are certainly special (in any barrel length, I'm still looking for a 6" gun to round out the trio below).

Congrats.....

Here's an earlier square butt 2" M&P. This one (obviously) has an S prefix and dates to September, 1947. Stocks are later.
