M29 4 screw Unicorn Help??
I have a 4" stamped M 29, 4 screw, Rosewood Cokes, right threaded cylinder.
Now this is the odd thing Ser.# 217271 stamped on yoke and grip frame. 117271 would make sence but 217271??
Any ideas out there?

mis stamped, I would bet ser# 217271 was re-used 10 years later?
It would be cool to own the 29-2 stamped with the same number.

Is the 271XXX number on the butt of the grip frame or on the side?

The first number is almost unreadable but on the grip frame it is
217271

It looks like 217 to me ?
The gun looks fabulous
I don't see that the stocks are rosewood from that picture.
Do you have a clearer one?

That doesn't look like a 4 Screw.
SN dates to 1966. In 1966 the M29 was a -2. Are you sure the extractor has right hand threads? Like, righty tighty? It should have left hand tightening threads. The trigger guard screw was eliminated in 1962, 4 years before yours was at least assembled.

I think the mystery has been solved - a make-believe fourth screw was counted on the frame....The "fourth screw" on a N frame is in front of the trigger guard...

The way I idendtify rosewood is and I don't claim to be an expert.
Rosewood is harder, dense tight grain, they weigh more than walnut.
Rosewood in time will turn almost black

S217000 would date to around late 1961 or early 1962 and would be a 4-screw Model 29. Not sure what you are questioning.

For future reference the S is part of the serial.
Many S&W revolvers use a letter or letters in the serials.
Some do not.
But many do and if there are letters present they are a part of the serial.
Don't ignore the letters.
