pre 19 grip question
Were the pre 19's shipped with Walnut diamond target grips or the Goncolo Alves?

I believe the earlier ones were walnut, but not sure when they changed over to Goncalo Alves.

I have an early one with walnut targets. I assume they are original, but there is no number inside and I have not had the gun lettered yet.

Per S&W's literature, the switch to Goncalo alves was made in 1959.

How early or late is your Pre 19 ?
I have a late non Model marked 19 around K317900 range that shipped May 1958 and had Rosewood checkered targets when I purchsed it.
I wasnt alive in 1958 so do not know if they are original to the gun but they do have the earlier 50's style checkering pattern which seems to change around 1963 (ish)

.357 Combat Magnum
moosedog:
Per Roy's letter, my Pre-19 .357 Combat Magnum K260903 shipped on Jan 18, 1957 with "...checkered walnut target grips", but they don't look like walnut to me. Goncolo Alves?

Thanks all. I just confirmed that I had a old factory letter on my 1956 gun and it was shipped with walnut targets.
