The closest I have to SN S972993 on my list is S9706xx which shipped in 2/1948. However, I also show some earlier M&P SNs which shipped after 2/1948. This is because S&W did not ship from inventory in serial number order. Probably safe to say it likely shipped sometime in the first half of 1948.

I show an S9706xx (different from the one mentioned by DWalt) that shipped in January, 1948. I also show one less than 200 digits higher than yours that shipped in February, 1948. So a likely ship date for yours would be Jan/Feb 1948.

You must have recently purchased this gun on Gun Broker because it shows in my database as having been offered there at least twice.

Enjoy it!
