Question pre model 32 .38 post-war

HELLO AGAIN;

I'm a little confused about production dates for the .38/32 terrier. Pgs.149 and 205 state years (1948-1974) and on Pg. 397 it states (1949-1969), are we talking about two different pistols? I just got a pre- .38/32 terrier (four screw) S/n 7738x, so with production s/n's from 54475-122678 I'm guessing mine is from1953-56?.

I'm not sure about the book info... but I do have a Terrier that I lettered. The letter states that the Terrier was temporarily discontinued during WWII (s/n 54417) and production resumed in 1949.

It went underwent several changes during the 1950's. Model numbers were assigned in 1958 and the Terrier became Model 32. In 1974, the demand of the Terrier had decreased to such a small number that it was finally dropped from production.

Mine is in the 60,xxx range and shipped in October of 1951.

Hope this helps!

I don't know the exact SN at which the Model 32 yoke stamping began in 1958, but I believe it is around 80,000 or at least not very far below that. Therefore I'd think that your SN 7738x would likely have a shipping date in 1956-57.

A couple of Terriers in the 77xxx serial number range are known to have shipped in mid-1955. That doesn't nail down the shipping date of your specific gun, but it does indicate that it could have shipped that early.

No, same revolver. In 1969 serial #s changed to include letter prefixes, so you have to turn the page to 398 and the Terriers are continued under the R Serial Prefix. The Mod 32 Terriers and Mod 33 Regulation Police revolvers do continue to 1974, but an error in the book left out their Model #s 32 & 33 under the R prefix list. Mod 32 is also mistakenly listed under the H prefix. The earliest stamped Model 32 in my database is #832XX.

Yours is a Model of 1953 NEW I frame, Pre Model 32.
For reference, #77062 shipped November 19, 1955.

This will provide much more detail and photos of the I frames: http://smith-wessonforum.com/blogs/h...evolution.html

"Without pictures,it didn't happen!" We LIKE pictures here. From the SN range I'm assuming it has a serrated ramp front sight but from your "four screw" description, I wonder about trigger guard, round or oval?

Talking confused about.38/32 production dates!

THANK YOU ALL, For the information, I think you all narrowed the production year down very close. I did read
in the book Pg.149 a production change (1955 Upper sideplate screw eliminated (three screw).

thanks again; CAM2

Eliminate upper sideplate screw change order 12/13/55 the 4th screw on I & J frames, on 9/7/55 the 5th screw on K frames, and on 9/7/56 the 5th screw on N frames.
