S&W .38 special 1946?
This hasn't been out of the safe in years. If my memory serves me it's a 1946.

That's a beauty. The S series hit a pleasing balance between the old lines and the new trimmings. Jpack will be here shortly to fill in some details.

Yes, it very likely shipped in November of that year.
You have an exceptionally nice example of the type.

^^^^ This.
I'm normally not a big fan of long barrels, but I've got one about a month older than yours, likely a retired police gun, with a period-appropriate Mershon adapter, and it's my favorite M&P in my collection to shoot.

Almost certainly it was made in 1946, with probable shipping in the late 1946 to early 1947 period. It appears correct for a postwar M&P, and made prior to the changeover from long action to short action in 1948.

I have a 4" mid 50's M&P that is a blast to shoot. It's actually still 95% IMHO but it's so much fun to shoot it stays in the range bag all the time. I'll dust the old girl off and try to get some photos. I love me some gun porn.
