Default Trying to ID A S&W .44 spl.Revolver

I recently received this revolver from my Father. I'd like to find out what model and year it was made. As far as I can tell it's a hand-eject, 5 screw, double action revolver.
serial# on end of butt stock frame is 72XXX
on the other end is the # 30 and it is sideways and some symbol which is hard to identify, it looks like a crown.
inside the yoke on the frame there is only a 4 digit assembly #
on the left hand side of the frame where the barrel is pinned there is a stamp( crown on top letters BNP in middle and at bottom there is a chevron with markings on either side at top
the stampings on the right side of barrel are 44 S.&W. Special CTG.
On left hand side of barrel is stamped SMITH&WESSON.
it has a matte blue or parkerized finish and has a 4" barrel and has a main spring strain screw. Can you help me out???

This one is going to be interesting. I am away from resources but others will be able to help you out. Can you post a couple photos to help in identification ?

There are at least 2 possibilities for an ID. It may be an early post-WW II .44 Hand Ejector, but there should be a S with the digits on the bottom of the grip frame. This number would read with the grip frame up and the barrel pointing left. The other is it may be a WW I era .455 Mk II British revolver that has had a .44 Special barrel and cylinder fitted. This would fit with the extra stamps you mention, which may be British proof markings. This SN would read with the barrel to the right.

If it is a put-together gun, the numbers on the rear cylinder face and barrel flat (near the ejector rod) will not match the SN, or those areas will have different numbers between the two parts, or no numbers at all. Photos would be a big help here.

Thanks murphydog . The S/N on the bottom of the frame reads with the barrel facing to the right ( no S ) .The number on the back of the cylinder doesn't match the other numbers . I miss measured the barrel it is a five inch not four . The rear sight is a hand ejector post war adjustable , but the rear blade has a white outline around the notch . I do not thing the grips are original . I thing they are S&W grips but not period correct , The top of the grip covers part of the S&W trade mark stamping on the frame side plate . I think the gun was refinished , because their are pit marks on the frame under the present finish only were the smaller original grips would have made contact. if this gun is a WW1 era mk11 British Rev. was it made by S&W and shipped to England and would it be a model 1917. I wish I could post pictures of the gun but I do not have a camera . Sorry for making it harder on you guys to help me but I thank you for what advise you give.

With no photos and a sketchy description it's difficult to say but the adjustable sight makes it sound like a heavily modified gun. In that case anything is possible. May have all manner of mixed up parts. Really need to see a photo. Absolutely certain there are no letters in the serial?

"if this gun is a WW1 era mk11 British Rev. was it made by S&W and shipped to England and would it be a model 1917."

A 1917 would be chambered in .45 ACP and have a 5 1/2" barrel. The 2nd Model .455 was chambered in .455 and would have a 6 1/2" barrel.
