Help with identity
A friend of mine sent me pics of this revolver to identify. Any ideas on age and value?
It is a 38 Special...
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forum.
Very nice revolver that dates to pre WWI.
Someone else will be along soon, I'm sure, to pin down the date a bit more.

It is in beautiful condition. The S/N puts it in the late teens I think. I have 231046, which shipped in June 1919. I would guess its value between $450 and $650. It is a common revolver in uncommonly good condition.

I had two similar revolvers in the 284xxx range, they dated to 1918.
S&W did not ship in serial number order, but that should give you a rough time frame.

THAT is a gem! Very nice condition, with period correct stocks and all. Wow!
I'd love to stumble across one like that some day.

I think it would be somewhere near jmace57's upper end: $600 or so. Very, very nice!

Outstanding! Stocks from that period are not often seen in such good condition.

Thanks for the warm welcome and info on the gun. I am most likely going to have it my safe soon! I have lurked here for a few years and last month joined. I have several M&P semi autos that I compete in IDPA with and recently got a 686SSR to give a try in the revolver division. I have been having so much fun with it a jailed a Performance Center 625 as well. Can't wait to try it out later this month

NICE old gun.
It is a 38 M&P.
In my opinion, that is the prettiest configuration of the M&P from among several it had over the years.
The Blue was never better than the Gold medallion era.
The gorgeous Blue, the Gold medallions and the Circassian just really make one light up.
FWIW, that is a very late 05-3rd, probably shipped in 1915.

Well I was able to get this gun! It's in jail right now (damn komifornia laws). On the 23rd it will be in my hands.
The prior owner also gave me this holster for the gun. It looks custom made, anyone have any input on its origin?

That SN would date it to around early-mid 1915. Closest SN I have on my list is 2387xx which shipped on 3/5/15. It is in uncommonly fine condition for an M&P from that time period.

I believe the style is called a Mexican Loop holster. But if there are no maker's marks on the back, it's almost impossible to given you any accurate information.
