Default 5 inch M&P; "S" Serial #; Date help please

I bought the M&P several months ago. I believe it dates from 1947-48. Hoping 47. The SN is: S 885034. I'd appreciate being able to narrow it down. Thanks.

Most likely shipped in April, 1947.
This one is in my database but I don't have an exact ship date for it. It is listed as having a 5" barrel and the last time it was seen, it was wearing stocks that are of later origin than the gun.

The closest SN I have listed with an exact date is S9012xx which shipped 5/27/47, so a couple of months earlier than that is reasonable for yours, as the S&W production rate seems to be around 8,000 per month during the 1946-48 period.

Jack- the stocks do not number to the gun. They are numbered 8112. They are magnas with center diamond and black washers. Is that enough to pinpoint a year and what the original revolver was?
The stocks pictures in SCSW are tiny & I can't see enough to differentiate between styles. Guess I'll have to look for better pictures on the forum. The pictures of the backside are easier to see, with my magnifier. Mine have no top relief hole & I guess the "stock circle insert" is blued not black. SCSW says these are 1946- until the diamonds disappeared. Thanks for your dating info, I'm hoping April. Thanks, Bill

The likely possibility would be C 8112 which is an M&P which probably shipped in mid-1948 or thereabouts. The C series followed the S series. A picture would help.

I have S885034 listed as having early C prefix stocks with the stamped number being 8112. That would be after they went to the flat sideplate screw, so the relief would be absent. The washer would be of stamped metal finished in blue. They would have the sharp shoulder, so would be in the 1946-1953 series. However, if we want to get technical, they'd be 1948-1953 because they lack the dimple for the round head screw. By early 1953, the shoulder angle had been softened. The diamond remained until the 1967-68 period.

Just to be really picky, another possibility is K 8112; the stocks might first have been assigned to a K-22 Masterpiece that would have been manufactured and shipped around mid-1947.

That is a possibility, David. My only question about that is the screw/dimple. Do you know if the early K target guns (1947) had a flat or round head screw? I have no information on that point.

Good point. I don't have easy access to my earliest postwar K-frame target revolvers at the moment, or I'd pull the stocks and look. Maybe someone else can check.

I have it in mind that all postwar K-frames had the flat sideplate screw where magnas would cover it. Am I wrong about that?

I'll just mention (not that I think this would apply here) that I once got a prewar revolver with postwar magnas on it that were held proud by the domed screw. I just drilled a dimple to make them fit. So even if the stocks in question had a dimple, it might have come from somebody just messing around to make use of something he had in the woodpile.

Yes. That would not be correct. My own collection shows that until at least January, 1947, the rear sideplate screw still had a round head. By September of that same year it had changed to a flat head screw. This applies to the M&P line. As mentioned before, I can't speak with any authority regarding the target frame guns.
