If the caliber is .32-20, .32 Winchester, then it is a Model 1902 1st change S&W Winchester Model manufactured ca. 1904. And that is what I would have to say since the SN is too low to be a .38 Spl. version of the same gun and have the extractor rod style this gun has.

It should say, 32 Winchester CTG. I agree with Alk8944 on the identity and age. The stocks look great and are probably original. The rest of the gun is not too shabby, either.
But I'm wondering if it has been reblued. The hammer and trigger don't show any case colors and appear to be blued. The barrel seems to have pitting under the blue.

Hmmm. My eyes say not reblued on this one. Looks like an even patina to me, including hammer and trigger, making those parts look dark.

Welcome to the Forum.

.32-20 (.32 Winchester, .32 WCF) are a lot of fun. I have one like yours and have had a few others as well. I carried one of .32-20s when i worked in the jail.

Enjoy your family heirloom. By the way, where was your great granddaddy a police officer? .32-20 handguns seem to be more common in the South.

Be was not a police officer. He worked at our local port before there was a harbor police. Kinda like a security guard i guess.

As a shooter, the main problem with a .32-20 M&P is ammunition availability and cost. Therefore, most who are fond of shooting guns chambered in .32-20 will load their own ammunition. Not the best choice for defensive use, but it will do the job. The .32-20 S&W K-frames were not particularly popular, and only about 144,000 were made between 1899 and ca. 1930 when production ceased. M&Ps in .38 Special were far more popular, and about 4 times as many .38 Specials were sold as those in .32-20 during the same period.
