Cool Which Stocks for An Engraved 44 Magnum - New Options Added (Post 46)

I spent a little while last Saturday trying on "shoes" for this tastefully engraved (Andrew Bourbon) pre-29. I'm still struggling...

What are your thoughts? [Four additional Options added in Post 46]

1. Smooth GA presentation stocks - late 1950's - 1960's vintage:

2. Ivories (nothing more needs to be said):

3. Keith Brown GA Ropers:

Let me know your pick and why...

Thanks,

Richard: I'd pick the Ivory... just sets off the engraving. Keith Brown's would be runnerup.

I like the smooth GAs. Classic good looks. Does not cover the art work at all.

If the Keith Browns were smooth it would be a really hard call. Ropers make me think prewar.

The smooth Ga look the most right to me on it.
I like Ivory but to my eye on that gun it finishes dead last.
so I am exactly opposite of quinn

As much as I like Ivory grips, those KB Ropers look right on that one.

The Keith Brown Ropers speak to me on that classic. If the ivories weren't so bright, I might choose them first.

Ropers for me as well, as it sits they look nice without distracting from the engraving

The ivory would look a tad more pleasing on the eye to me if they were aged just a bit, but they still look nice so gleaming white. They certainly do contrast well with the bluing.

I would want to see some mammoth ivory on it too, I like the character of mammoth ivory, but it would take the right set to compliment the gun without distracting from the engravings.

The stocks are all beautiful, but the GA presentation are my first choice because of the fit with the engraving. I like the space between the stocks and the engraving. The ivory and the KB's seem to overlap the engraving a little. What a tough choice to make!

At first glance the Keith Browns are the the best looking stock both separate from the revolver and their checkering goes best with the engraving. However, only the Presentation Targets leave a complete border and the engraving has a border every where else. The ivories over lap the engraving so bad they look like they were put on temporarily for a trip to the range. I can eliminate the ivories but it would take a while to decide between the two wood stocks.

Exact order as presented. The Presentations best emphasize the engraving, and show the borders. The ivories scream class and elegance. In my mind, the engraving and blue compliment the grips instead of the other way around. The KB Ropers would be great on an older pistol. In my mind the force the eye to the grips first and not the gun or the engraving.

In a nutshell, the first picture says "What a beautiful engraved revolver and the grips are nice. The second picture simply says "What an elegant and classy gun", and the third says "Wow, what amazing grips.....oh yeah, it is also an engraved gun". Which response are you looking for?

The KB Ropers are the choice, both to my eye and to my logic.

Your ivory stocks don't fit the engraving pattern. That is the first thing my eye tells me when I look at that combination. A miss-match.

The GA Presentations look nice, but they scream "miss-match" to me also. I see the bug screw and immediately date the revolver. Then I see the football Presentation stocks and ask, "What happened to the Cokes?" The five-screw revolver looks robbed of its stocks with these. The Presentation stocks are a down-grade in this sense. You don't want down-graded wood on an engraving enhanced revolver.

The KB Ropers overcome these issues. The observer sees it is a five-screw gun and thinks "Cokes." The KB Ropers make a statement that explains the absence of Cokes: The revolver was up-graded with engraving and also with finer wood. The same logic would apply to the ivories, but they just don't fit.

In the end, if this were my revolver, of these choices I would settle on the KB Ropers; otherwise I would find the best set of original Cokes available.

It's good to have such a quandary. That's a nice revolver.

I vote for #1.Let the engraving be the show.
I would put the KBs on a standard version, where they can be the show on their own..
I'm not a fan of ivory.

Fantastic.
Marvelous.
Stupendous.
In that order.
All 3 are great and I cannot say one trumps the others.
I think they all look great and you cannot go wrong with any of them.
I think the smooth presentation stocks are the best fit for the engraving.

I really like smooth GA's with some nice grain so that would be my choice, plus they look good with that engraving pattern. I like ivory also but maybe more so on a non engraved revolver. It's nice to have such a dilemma.

I love all three sets of grips that you have.

The Smooth Targets work well, because they do not pull away the view from the engraving.

The Ivories are stunning, but IMHO the Ivories should go on a pristine un engraved gun so THEY can be the focal point.

To my eye the Keith Brown Roepers go best. They have a nice pattern, the top of the grip transitions nicely to the engraving on the revolver.

I'd like to see the ivories on your 8 3/8" engraved Nickel Model 29, just for kicks. I know I said they should go on an unengraved gun, but I'd be curious to see what they looked like on that scratched Nickel 29.

If the ivory grips had the same footprint as the Smooth GA's I would have said ivory. The Ropers also cut off just a bit of the engraving, so Smooth Ga for me.

All three sets are beautiful. Before I looked at the ivory grips installed, I thought ivory. But, after seeing the ivory grips on the gun, they just did not bring out the engraving like I thought they would.
The smooth targets, on the other hand, fit, and enhance the appeal of the whole gun. Just my humble opinion.

I like the GA for that masterpiece since the others cover part of the engraving as others have mentioned. I'd like the others on a gun that isn't already adorned. Beautiful either way. Have you considered ivory Magnas, or would they be inappropriate on a gun that size?

Yes it is post factory. Andrew Bourbon (trained by Alvin White) engraved it a few years ago. I purchased it from the person who commissioned the engraving. I love the cleanness and presentation of the pattern. It reminds me of some of the patterns done by Oscar Young...

Richard, that would be a difficult decision since all three are truly awesome. I'd probably keep each one on for four months and then change them. If I had to make a choice of one, being more of a traditionalist I would choose the smooth GA's. The one I would like to see is the smooth rosewood presentations as used by S&W in the 50's.

Bill:

You know that I love the 1950's Rosewood presentation target stocks, especially on 3.5" 357 engraved pintos (if I recall correctly, yours is a Jarvis engraved gun.. I think both of those you posted are Jarvis - right?). I had these RW's on it before - for some reason, they just kind of blended in... So I tried the ones that you see above.

Tally through post 36:

1. Smooth GA - 16 votes
2. Ivory - 7 votes
3. KB Ropers - 9 votes

All of the accompanying rational and thoughts are much appreciated.

I agree that the darker rosewood presentation grips are not as flashy as the GA's just a little more traditional, the 2-tone 357 is Jarvis. the 4" 44 Magnum might be Virginia LeBlanc who mentored under Jarvis. Don't know for sure. This 44 Magnum has flash!

If it were me I would go with smooth Rosewood, I have heard they made smooth presentation Rosewood COKES at one time but are very rare. if they did Doc 44 probably has a set and might show them to us. at lest I think I read in the S&W book that they did make a few at one time.....................................M*

Default It is a Question of Harmony....

Master Po to Kwai Chang, ca 1870s:
Quote:
"It is a question of Harmony, Grasshoppah. The engraving and grips must be in harmony with each other, with all life, and with the universe.
The engraving by this master is complex and intricate. The ivory, though elegant, is too simple. They cover part of the engraving, so they lack harmony.
The engraving is not factory, so factory grips are not harmonious with the chi and era of the engraving, so they lack harmony.
The KB Ropers match the chi of the engraving, but, in covering part of it, they lack harmony.
The only answer can be a pair of KB Ropers made to fit the engraving. They must be made of very burly or crotchy Circassian walnut so the grain is very striking with no regular pattern. The wood must be intricate and ornate to achieve harmony with the engraving. They should be made like this pair with double ribbons, but they should have a satin finish so the intricate grain shows completely from any angle without glare. Of course they should be fitted to your hand.
Then, you will have achieved Harmony between the gun, the engraving, the grips, yourself, all other guns, and the universe. The universe will be in balance. Even a blind man such as myself can see this.
Now, grab the pebble from Master Kan, walk across the rice paper to your computer, and email Keith Brown."

You are sooooooo lucky I remembered this episode of "Kung Fu" and could find the quote for you.

What if you took ivory grips and had the engraved to match.

Actually I need a whole safe of stocks like those. The problem is that finding stocks like those is not an easy task. I know, cause I buy every set like those that I find.

Funny you should say that, zen master K Brown and I have been emailing recently on several long standing projects... Santa did however bring me a couple of sets of KB smoothies... So here are a few more choices:

4. Original perfect set of Cokes
(as requested above):

5. Keith Brown Smooth Dark Ribbon Maple

6. Keith Brown Smooth Honey Ribbon Maple

7. The Factory Dark Rosewood Presentation Stocks (from above):

The coke bottle stocks are original to the 44 and I would leave it that way if it were mine. A second choice would be the factory rosewoods which is what most likely it would have shipped with if the engraving had been done by S&W (the rosewoods also match engraving pattern perfectly). The KB stocks are very nice, but do not match the engraving on the side plate or left side of the frame very well.

Keith Brown. The color and the curved lines of the roper grips match the engraving very well. They complement each other quite nicely without competing.

The stock grips are okay, well, stock. Can't beat originality.

Ivory doesn't go very well. The gleaming ivory pulls the eyes away from from the engraving. It being white makes the grips chunky compared to the slender lines of the gun.

Don't really think the other grips are better than the first 3.

If you still find yourself having difficulty, send me the gun and the 3 grips. I will do my best to select which is the best option. But that may take a while.
