Smith and Wesson 1857-1945
By Neal & Jinks. Found a copy in Albuquerque gun shop. Available on Amazon for $65 but has mixed reviews. Mostly negative feedback regarding the pictures. I couldn't look in the book because it was wrapped in plastic so was a little nervous about purchase.
Anyway I went ahead and bought it, and after thumbing through it I felt that the pictures are fine considering when they were taken and the technology at the provable time.
So I'm wondering if any here have the book and what your thoughts are with respect to content.
BTW I only paid $40 for it.

Good for you! This is one of the "required" books for a S&W collector. I refer to mine regularly and have learned a great deal from it. Of course, mine is extra special since the front endpaper has a certain author's signature on it!
You got it for a good price, in my opinion.

I have two versions of the book. I picked up a 1st Edition, but use a 1990s edition for my work book.
I bet every long term collector on this Forum owns at least one copy of the book. Remember it stops at 1945 and many out there don't even own one S&W revolver that old, so it is of little interest to them.

A couple other books of interest to several of us are: Smith & Wesson Hand Guns (© 1945) by Roy McHenry and Walter Roper, as well as Roy Jinks' first book History of Smith & Wesson.

Here is one of my copies. This one is special because it's signed by both Roy and Bob. By the way Mark The History of Smith & Wesson is actually Roy's third book.

Hmmm.... Somehow I had it in my head that "The History" was before the Neal and Jinks book. Thanks Don.

I have both first and second editions of Neal & Jinks numbered Presentation copies. The very first revised edition I bought cost me $100.00, and I was glad to pay it.

I very likely have every book on/about S&W ever published---excepting a few losers I was able to preview first---and a few others I was warned away from. Smith & Wesson Hand Guns was my very first one----way back when---a first edition yet---although I don't know if there ever was a second/subsequent edition----seems unlikely somehow.
That said, I will happily send my first edition of Smith & Wesson Hand Guns (McHenry & Roper) to anybody who wants it---free---for nothing---with my deepest sympathies.

I bought a nice copy about 1.5 years ago off EBay for around $30. It was signed by Roy and a short paragraph written to someone. I'm out of town and don't have it on hand. It was signed in the 70's. IIRC

I bought a second edition about 25 years ago for more than $300, it was out of print and extremely difficult to find. It was not only the most expensive S&W I ever purchased because it began a collecting trend, but is as also the best buy because it taught me what was original and desirable.
Great book especially for collectors of antiques.

You have to take on-line reviews with a grain of salt. I think some folks got a degree in English Lit and don't know what to do with it so they spend their days pretending to be literature critics.
They will complain that the book doesn't engage the reader with a gripping tale of angst, betrayal, and ultimate redemption.
This for a book about how to plant tulips!

Ralph-
Why? Is it just in ratty condition? Mine is a reprint, but I find it quite valuable, esp. the data in the back. That's where I learned that all M-1917 cylinders were heat -treated and where I saw the point at which M&P .38's were first heat-treated.

Texas, you must have a powerful aura about you! I can think of no other reason why I would have returned to this thread. Having done so, I learned the book had been reprinted. That was a shocker, but proves the old saying about fooling all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time.
No, the book is not in ratty condition. Actually, it's in rather good condition----on the outside. The inside is a different matter altogether! My charm school conditioning prevents me from expressing my opinion of this book in truly appropriate language (not to mention what the Big Gorilla would do to me if I did), so------------------------------. The inside is, at best----------------------I think incomplete is the most appropriate term. Given that, it is also inaccurate. Given that, it is of little to no value to me----or to anybody else who wishes to deal with facts. On balance, the best I can say about it is it was picked too green----not ready for prime time (as some might say today).

I am still curious as to which of these 1st Editions has the earliest dust cover? Mine is the one on the right and it has a signature plus is dated 1968. I may have to buy yet another Neal/Jinks book.

I've never had a 1st Edition, so I can't really answer your question about the picture on the right.
However, the jacket on the left is the same as both copies that I've owned (I gave the unsigned copy to a young protege a couple years ago). Even in your picture, I can see the statement on the dust jacket that says, "Revised Edition," so it certainly is not a First Edition. In that, it is the same as my remaining copy, which Roy signed on February 7, 1980.
If you look at the Forward on page 7, you will see that it starts with this sentence:
"The purpose of this Revised Edition is to add new information that has been discovered by additional factory research and to make necessary corrections to the original text . . ."
On the copyright page, you will find that the First Edition carried a copyright date of 1966; the Revised Edition was issued in 1975.
I hope this helps.

Gary, I have the same dust cover and the copyright date is 1966 and was signed by Roy in 1970. So I guess mine is a first edition, pictures above.

Thanks. Both dust jackets are 1st Editions, since both show no second printing dates or 2nd Edition, but sometime early in printing, the dust jacket was changed. Many printers have done this and the earliest is usually more valuable. Just curious.

Your incorrect. The revised edition is in fact the second edition. The revised edition has over 434 pages, while the 1st edition has only 360 printed pages.
I have never seen a 1st edition with a different dust jacket other then the one that everyone I've seen has.

That was such a long time ago, I forgot the question . . . after reviewing, I do have a question about your cover photo. I now assume it is the 2nd Edition and you did not include a picture of your 1st Edition?? Does your "Revised Edition" show any edition changes on the inside?
