Opinion on value of nickel pre-12
A local guy sent me pics of this. I have not actually put my hands on yet but he says in great condition. Serial number C90xxx, steel cylinder with non original grips and no box. I know it's hard without more info, but could i get an opinion as to value? He is asking $700 which I thought might be a little high.
Thank you in advance and have a Blessed Evening!

It seems a little on the high side to me too - at first. The condition appears to be fairly high, and it's not one you're likely to see every time you turn around. I'd really have to want that specific gun before I'd consider it at that price, and without the original stocks - or even correct factory stocks, I'd be trying to get it for a substantial discount. Original stocks for Airweight M&Ps are different than for their steel framed counterparts and finding a pair in equal condition to the gun may take a while...

Before buying a M12 I'd have to personally inspect it as the M12 has been one of the more troublesome guns Smith has ever produced. Frame cracking is very common on these models and there is no way to fix it once that happens.

The very earliest known (1953) .38 Airweight K frames were all round butt and in the C 230000 SN range, so with this SN I would guess it is a steel frame .38 Military & Police from about 1950.
It appears nice and the nickel finish in this era is much less common than blue, so if it is correct and original I think $700 is not too far out of the ballpark of reasonable pricing.

Update
Looked at gun today. It is a pre model 10 in really nice shape. Some guy had told him it was a pre-12.
Thank you for all your help!

Without the original stocks, $700 still seems high to me, but I'm a card carrying cheap skate. An in-hand inspection might change my mind, but I'd have to (specifically) want a nickel plated two inch 5-screw M&P pretty badly to pay that much. With the factory original (numbered) stocks it would be a lot more attractive to me.
That said, two inch M&P's are pretty cool....

I agree with the others. I think it is all-steel pre-Model 10, and the grips are from much later than the gun, which is probably from around late 1949. However, there would be no problem finding nice period-correct grips if you are interested in it, might cost around $75. It would not be attractive to me unless it were no more than about $450, preferably less. You might try for that if you are really interested. It is good it is not a Model 12. I personally will never consider buying any Model 12 due to the frame cracking problem. That's just me, as I have seen quite a few of those having cracked frames.
