Model 48 No Dash
Finally got a 48 that I've been after since last fall. From 59 serial no 406xxx, 6" with the 22 rf cylinder too. In fact came with a K frame 6" 22 rf barrel extra, that will go in the parts box. The 48 is in great shape and am anxious to get out an shoot it this weekend. Have to see but think I have 3 or 4 different types of WRM ammo. One thing I did notice is the caliber on the barrel is listed as "MRF CARTRIDGE' not WRM, which I thought was different. At my age I'm surprised how anxious I am to shoot this Smith.

CONGRATS!!!! Several years ago when I got this one, w/22cylinder, , I quickly learned to take along a GI cleaning brush to the range. I also stocked up on some ammo, the last buy was a case at a gun show. A few years later 22 ammo buying hit the skids. Not sure why the build up after a few cylinders full? but it does. Been going to polish the cylinder but haven't done it yet. Maybe a Winter project for this Winter. Shown before, but here she is again.

Ejector rod is a given, still have my S&W issue tool from when I went through the factory Armor's school. Works great and doesn't mar the ejector rod as I have seen on some of the older Smith's. Picture is only possible if my son does it for me. Looks like any other 6" 48, only modification is a trigger shoe that will be removed shortly. Will have cleaning equip. with me, thanks for the heads up.

Congrats...here's mine for comparison:
Shipped October of 1959: Red ramp, white outline, smooth rosewood target stocks, target hammer, target trigger, and box. I bought it from the daughter of the original owner.

the MRF was used during a time when advertising a competitor's name was avoided and since the predecessor to this cartridge was the WRF(Winchester rimfire), to avoid confusion. Additionally, the model 53 was called the 22 Magnum, another point of confusion.
Later it became standardized as the WMR(Winchester magnum rimfire), and, as a side point, the .256 win mag became standard use and naming.

That explains the barrel markings. Am anxious to see how it shoots with the rf cylinder installed. I have an old 5 screw K22 that is more accurate than I can hold it, don't expect that out of the 48 but am hoping for good accuracy for me and the old eyes for plinking anyway. Thanks for the info that has been given to me.

Hey, Congratulations! I'm sure you'll have a great time with it.
I bought this M48 no dash 1960 with an unmatched extra cylinder and a nearly unfired M 586 no dash 8 3/8 at Reno a few years ago, as a package deal.
Model 48 no dash.jpg
The M48 has a wide trigger and hammer, W/O and a red dot added to front sight. I added the Diamond targets...(big hands) It's a real great shooter. But .22 mags are not as cheap as they were...of course...It has some thin finish wear, but otherwise in great shape.
It's a fun Smith...enjoy it.

Have one in the K359 range, I believe it is. Try different brands to see what works best. Keep an old toothbrush handy cause after about 12 rounds you'll have to brush the yellow unburned powder granules from under the extractor so the cylinder will close and the gun will function. Nice guns and you'll enjoy it.

I've been through a few 48s, and love them.

I have a .22 LR cylinder for mine as well and have been satisfied with its accuracy with the smaller cartridges. Would like to hear how the LR cylinder works for you.

having this day my mandatory three cups of coffee......my previous post should have said '22 rem jet' as opposed to 256 rem mag. ahhhh..... the wonders of caffeine. same holds true.....most times manufactures were reluctant to advertise for a competitor...think 257 Roberts: 257 Remington Roberts, 257 Winchester Roberts.
