Pre model 18 nickel Nickel Carved steer Pearl Grips
I have a Pre model 18 factory nickel that was shipped to a NY jewelry store in the 50's with a Pre 17 blued gun. The 18 has carved steer head pearl grips and the 17 has carved steer head Ivory grips. Any one have any idea if there were other models produced like this? Or a value? Any info would be great.

Do you have a letter from S&W confirming the nickel as original configuration? That finish would have been special order on a K22 Combat Masterpiece.
I agree on the photos. What's with telling us about these interesting revolvers and not posting photos?

Certainly out of the norm but some are out there. It would have been ordered special by someone in that finish.
Does your factory letter state what stocks it came with? Likely the steerheads were put on later.
In great condition and verification with a letter i would think $3000+

The carved grips were likely added at the jewelry store, certainly not by SW. Wolf & Klar (jewelry, pawn, guns, hardware, whatever) in Ft. Worth was famous for this add on to early 44 Hand Ejectors. But, we would love to see yours!

There is a N before the K in serial on barrel on the nickel gun. Not on the blued one.
The pics worked . scroll up to 7 to see. (not very good at this)

Just to raise a point, does the front sight on the 18 look different to anyone else? Maybe it's just because it's sitting on a nickle barrel.

Bright blue or nickel could be purchased for an extra $5.46 for the .22 Combat Masterpiece.

Front sight is blue. I have a K38 Combat Masterpiece in nickel, I think it's 1954 production, ant both front and rear are blue.

Please at your convenience provide pictures of those three that will be a sight worth seeing especially the first two. Two rare birds side by side.

Here's a few factory Nickel Smith's I managed to find. Pre-18 5 screw lettered,a Pre-19 4 screw #264321,a 19-2,and threw in a couple of J's. A 51 with extra cylinder with a ole 34 no dash. Not the best pic's sorry will try to get better.Gotta luv those old Nickel guns!

Nice thread. You know, one looks at photo like above and it is no wonder we old timers wish for days gone by--- what is put out today just cannot compare-- they function, most of the time, but just don't have any class at all-- JMHO
