Hello I'm new to the forum and could use some help. I recently acquired an old S&W revolver and have no idea what I have. It's tight and functions perfectly, it has a 5" barrel, 4 screws on the side plate and 1 screw on the front of the trigger guard. The s/n is 95xxx and is located on the bottom of the butt and also under the barrel. Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

Welcome to the Forum. Your serial number puts the ship date around 1907. You have what I call a Model 1902 Military & Police because of the round butt. Others call it a Model 1905, because it was made after 1905, but the company only called the square butt Model 1905 back in the time your revolver was made.

It is either a 1st Change or a 2nd Change. The easy thing to look for is under the ejector star. If it has pins under the star that go into the cylinder, it should be a 2nd Change. That one looks like it has been "cleaned" to remove either the bluing or an original nickel finish, but hard to tell for sure which is the case. These are good strong shooters and any standard 38 Special ammunition will work just fine.

Caliber? If .38 Special, ca. 1907. If .32-20, ca. 1921. I think yours is the former from the pin above the trigger. It would have been called the Model 1902 with the rounded butt.

Thank you for the great info, it was very helpful. I did call a gunsmith and asked about having it reblued. He said it wouldn't add or subtract from the value. He said it is what it is so leave it like it is and enjoy it. Again thank you for the info

Welcome! A good coating of wax on the metal surfaces will keep it from rusting. If it is mechanically sound it should be safe with standard pressure .38 loads such as 158 gr round nose lead. Enjoy!

Welcome to the FORUM! Another good ammo choice would be 148 LWC. 158gr. LSWC. As mentioned, stick with mild ammo. I had a M&P 6" .38 from June 1919. Never had any problems shooting it. My father gave it to me a couple of years before he passed. I kept it a few years, and gave it to my son. If you keep some oil or CLP on your gun you should not have rust issues. Never store in a leather holster. Bob
