Need Help Identifying
I need help identifying the model and caliber of this pistol. Serial number on the bottom of the butt says 15xxx. The only other marks I can find are on the cylinder and the large S&W trade mark stamp. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum. That is a 32 Hand Ejector, 1st Model, or Model 1896. It was the first solid frame revolver made by S&W and was the beginning of the famous I frame line. It fires 32 Long ammunition that is still available at various online ammunition sites and sometimes in gun shops. It would have shipped sometime after the turn of the Twentieth Century, 1900 to 1905. One reason why the shipments were not in any sort of shipping order is that all frames were made before 1898 and the company did not pay attention to serial number order as they assembled and inventoried them. Even though your revolver was shipped after 1898, all are considered as antiques.

That is a darn nice looking little 1896. If it checks out and is clean on the inside, go shoot it. Cotton T-shirt and oil for cleaning. No steel wool or polishes. You got a little beauty. Best.

Nice things about this revolver:
1. In half-way decent condition, better than many I've seen.
2. The stocks appear to be original and intact.
3. The extractor rod knob is still there. Many are missing.
Great find. Congratulations!

I saw in the local Academy store yesterday that they had about 7 boxes of .32 Long (Aguila) on their shelf for $21/box. A very nice '96. Worth a factory letter.

Welcome to the forum.
Nice find. It's the 5screw version and there was also a 4 screw version. It has the long spur, non-police style hammer. It's the only Hand Ejector model with the patent dates and other information on the cylinder, and the last S&W revolver to do so. It has hardened steel shims imbedded in the cyl notches for longevity, which was soon eliminated on future models.
