Please identify old 38 Special 5 screw revolver
Hello, I just bought an old 38 revolver. The Marcas Regisitradas stamp is not on the side. Grips have diamond centers but may not be original. Also has mushroom shaped ejector rod. Can someone give me details on this revolver? Date made, type, grip info, etc. Any info would be great.
Thanks,
Bill

This .38 M&P shipped in the mid-1920's. it has been refinished but, from the sideplate, it appears to be a decent job. Might have pondered the finish a bit if the hammer and trigger weren't plated. The stocks are from much later...after WWII up to 1968. Original stocks would be plain checkered round top service grips, no medallion and a diamond around the escutcheons. You might also check the SN under the barrel and on the face of the cylinder to see if all 3 match.

The gun is a Model 1905 .38 Hand Ejector (Military & Police) 4th Change dating to late 1925-early 1926. The finish is Chrome, not Nickel. The stocks as mentioned are post WWII but no later than 1968. They are most likely between 1960-1968.
Chrome and Nickel are not the same color. They are easily differentiated, even in photographs. Nickel has a "soft", warm, somewhat yellow color, while Chrome has a "hard" cold, bluish-white color.

As a reference point, serial number 5315xx shipped in February, 1926. Your example would have been called a .38 Military & Police Square Butt revolver in the catalogs of the time.
Alk8944 and Wiregrassguy have given you accurate additional information.

It seems a little odd to me that the caliber marking is on the left side of the barrel, and no marking at all on the right side. Don't think I've ever noticed that on an M&P from that late....

The OP never mentioned if the barrel flat number matched the frame SN. It may be a earlier era replacement or another example of S & W never wasting good parts.
