Cool Love Affair - The 8.375 (8 3/8) inch 357 Magnum

When I first stated collecting N Frame 357's I thought that anything with barrels longer than 4" were front heavy, awkward, and just too dang long. ...then I purchased an 8.75" Reg Mag and the lights went on - these long tube 357's are BEAUTIFUL (and they shoot like a dream)!!! Since they only made the 8.75" barreled guns pre-war, I decided to try and collect every engineering change or model designation that was pinned and recessed with 8.375" (8 3/8") barrels. For the period of about one month last year, I thought that I might be able to accomplish my goal, but a certain mint in the box 8.375" Transitional 357 blew past my max bid and sold for somewhere near $30K!!

So, until a certain member here wants to gift me the Julian Hatcher Transitional, I'm stuck with an "almost" collection of 8.375" P&R 357s...

I finally took photos of a sample of my 8.375" guns, so here is the 8.375" photo thread that I have been meaning to post for a long time.

Pre-war 8.375" Registered Magnum (estimated 38 of them made). Ship date: May 1937

Pre-war Non Registered Magnum with a Humpback Hammer (I know of very few Non RM's in 8.375"). Ship date: February 1940

Transitional 357 Although Chad did not gift me The Gun , he did give me permission (see post 11 below) to post his photos of it here. Ship date: June 1948

Post-war 357 Magnum ("Pre-27"). Ship date: Nov. 1954

Model Marked 27 (no dash) with a set of early Keith Brown Thumb Rest Ropers. Ship date: November 1960

27-1 with a set of Cokes restored by Keith Brown. Ship date: March 1962

27-2 with a set of Kurac Smooth GA Targets. Estimated Ship date: 1976

I love all of the long 357's and would love to see photos of yours...

Thanks for letting me share,

As usual Richard, just a beautiful set of fine, classic S&Ws. And great photography, too! Thank you for sharing some of your fine collection with us, again!

"I thought that I might be able to accomplish my goal, but a certain mint in the box 8.375" Transitional 357 blew past my max bid and sold for somewhere near $30K"

You see Richard, if you would sell one or two of those 'less desirable' 3 1/2 inch Pre 27 engraved pintos, you would be in a much better frame of mind to go after that dream gun

I agree the long 27s are good shooters. The tapered barrel isn't nearly as muzzle heavy as are the 29s and 57s with their heavy barrel contours.

I only have one. A pedestrian 27-2 from the late 1970s in nickel. But it is the most complete S&W package I own. Even came with the cardboard sleeve for the case. No plain shipping box for the revolver, though.

Thumbs up

I too prefer them shorter but I'm open to change. Those look very good indeed.

SP,
Is the sleeve slightly larger than the presentation case? Was there a yellow plastic band to pull up the liner and get to the paperwork? If so there never was a plain box for the revolver.

If the outer cardboard box was larger, it contained the revolver in a plain blue box, the presentation case sealed in plastic film, and a cardboard spacer to keep things in place.

Your package may be complete!

I can appreciate your affinity for the long tubes, but I am not a fan. That being said, I certainly wouldn't turn down a Registered Magnum or 27-1 in any length. Good luck in your search to complete your collection.

I am a big fan of the long barrels also. I think the one word
that best describes the long tubes is elegant. That doesn't mean that I don't like the shorter barrel lengths,I do,and I have plenty of them, but I just think in S&W's premium revolver that the long barrel looks just right!

The first picture is a factory class A engraved 357 from 1953.The second picture is a Registered Magnum from 1938. The next picture is a factory 2 -tone from 1955 followed by a 357 from 1954 and finally a nickel 357 Magnum from 1954.

Those are beautiful! Thanks as always for sharing your excellent photos. Maybe some day the Hatcher gun will come to your extraordinary .357 collection.

Richard, You have a wonderful collection of 8 3/8 inch guns. I will agree with you that it's not quite complete without a Transitional model. Please feel free to add this picture in with your original post.

This is my only long tube S&W, but I'm proud to own it!
It's a 8.75" Non Registered Magnum. I'm looking forward to shooting it when the weather warms up a bit

The case perfectly fits in the box and there is a yellow lift strap. I always thought the guns came separately. Live and learn. Thanks.

Chad's Hatcher Transitional is one of my favorites. I found the link to the auction page for the "other one" that had my hopes up in late 2014 (Auction Item). Notice the auction estimate $4,000/$6,000 (I wish...).

...and a thread that discussed the auction here: Post War Pre-Model 27 357 Magnum - Sold for $26K: + commission

If anyone has seen another 8.375" Transitional 357, I would love to see some additional photos.

Thanks,

Fantastic. I had the chance about 3 years ago to buy a pretty beat up but still serviceable pre-27 "long tube" for $550. Still kicking myself, though that itch led me to buy a 686+ and find this forum.

I scratched that $500-well-used-long-tube-357 itch 4-5 years ago (maybe longer - I cannot remember) with this one. It has since become my favorite shooter:

The grips it came with were also smooth targets, but rather beat up, not period consistent (too new) and much lighter wood, so.. I slapped these rosewood/GA? grips on it - as they are a little closer in age and I love the way they look and feel.

I bought this pre 27 as a shooter about ten years ago. A good friend used to bust my chops about it being halfway to the target already. The thing about a long barreled revolver is that you notice how much shake you have in your hold.

Default More Pics

Had a request for more pics. It has an RBi rectangle and a 9-75 date stamp, not shown due to replacing pics. There are also some rough spots along the left side of the sight ramp and front sight.

I did not notice it the first time around - but the Cokes on that gun are very beautiful. Did it come from the factory with Cokes? Are those "original" Cokes or is that set one that has received your special brand of stock magic?

Thanks,

Thanks,
They did not come with the gun. They were the dredges of the earth that someone gave to me. Literally trash, and I'm not trying to pat myself on the back. Took me about a month to make them look respectable.

I've posted this one before but what the heck. This 8.75" RM belonged to a friend's grandfather. He has it now and, if he ever decides to sell, I've got first dibs. Terrible cell phone pic but the gun is in great shape and the certificate is pretty nice too!

Richard,
That is an amazing collection. Just beautiful. The long tubes are an acquired taste and I have acquired it. At first I thought the looked awkward but now having owned a M17 long tube, I love them. Thanks for showing those 27s.

My 1st year 8.75" RM with period Ropers (or original service grips with grip adaptor if you prefer) getting ready for some range time tomorrow. All of the guns pictured above are fantastic - thanks for posting!

I'm needing a little bit more 8.375" 357 love so I thought I'd throw this thread to the top and hope that some more long-tube beauties will be posted...

This one is still a bit of a work in progress as it is still awaiting its Keith Brown grips (the grips on it are a nice set of the Thailand eBay specials)...

Look at the work on the barrel - that is one of the reasons that I love the 8.375"ers -more barrel as a canvas for beautiful art work...

[Updated to show some photos with its Keith Brown Stocks]

I only have one M27 with an 8.375" barrel.
Its a 1982 "transition" M27-2. I got it because I didn't have a M27 with that length of barrel.
Now the only length I din't have is a 4".
I have 4 other model .357s with 4" barrels so I'm good.

Since they only made the 8.75" barreled guns pre-war, I decided to try and collect every engineering change or model designation that was pinned and recessed with 8.375" barrels.

Here's another of the 38 produced.

Richard-Thanks for resurrecting this thread. Many of us weren’t lurking around the Forum when you originally posted these beauties. I don’t have any 8.375” guns, or any engraved guns. But I enjoy viewing yours and those of other members. Thanks.

I only have the one 8.375" gun.
I'm not a fan of them, they look a little off to me.
Not a real fan of nickle either although to do look really nice.

I picked up this nickle 6" M27-2 because it has an "S" serial number.

OK, they are both nice looking M27s.

This one is a beautiful gun and it is why I love blue.

Sorry, I'm an American and these metric numbers confuse me. I don't think S&W ever used them! So 8.75 = 8-3/4, and 8.375 = 8-3/8. In my short memory, long-barreled Smiths have been 8-3/8. So when did Smith change the standard barrel length from 8-3/4 to 8-3/8?

Sorry to confuse you. I too am an American and sometimes I too struggle with the metric system - but converting a fraction 3/8" into a decimal by dividing the numerator (3) by the denominator (8), yields the decimal of 0.375" or .375 of an inch. This really has nothing to do with the metric system which would measure barrel lengths in centimeters and millimeters, rather than inches. I think that I started using the decimal notation, because Excel converts fractions to decimals and my collection inventory is maintained on an Excel spreadsheet, so I've gotten used to looking at them that way.

You are probably correct when it comes to measuring barrel length, but S&W did, and continues to use the decimal presentation as its principal expression of caliber measurement - for example the .357 Magnum (0.357 of an inch bullet diameter) or .44 Magnum (0.44 of an inch), or .22 Long Rifle, etc...

Correct.

In 1950, when S&W reintroduced the .357 Magnum after World War II (excluding the 142 Transitional .357s shipped in the late 1940s with pre-war parts and the post war safety and sights), the factory standardized the barrel lengths at 3.5" (3 1/2"), 5", 6", 6.5" (6 1/2"), and 8.375" (8 3/8").

Regardless of how it is expressed, in decimal format or in fractions, I love the 8.375 (8 3/8) inch N Frame .357 Magnums.

The .357 Magnum was introduced in 1935 and could be ordered with any barrel length between 3 1/2 inches and 8 3/4 inches in 1/4 inch increments. In late 1939, S&W stopped stamping a registration number in the yoke cut and issuing a certificate registering the revolver against defects in workmanship (i. e. Registration Certificate). At this time, the company standardized the barrel lengths for this model at 3 1/2, 5, 6, 6 1/2, and 8 3/8 inches. The 8 3/4 inch length was dropped because it resulted in a sight radius that was too long to be allowed in revolver competition matches.

Shown below is the last .357 Magnum I had in my collection. A two-tone shipped in 1952. Click on the photo for a better look.

Glad this thread is back - I missed it the first time. Didn’t know I liked the long tubes until I stumbled across one in a pawn shop for 525 and at least was smart enough to snap it up.

No pics handy - maybe later.

Great shooter - call it a hand rifle.

Why limit yourself to just .357? (And Richard, I know that you don't!)

From right to left:

Since these pictures were taken I have acquired an 8-3/8" Model 15-5 in .38 Special. It is physically identical to the Model 14-4 but was produced when the Model 14-5 came along with the full length underlug.

I just love shooting the long tubes. Looks are for beauty contests.

Long sight radius and extra velocity is always nice to have when shooting out there at respectable distances (100 yards plus).

I shoot off a bench rest these days so the weight is just an added bonus to tame the recoil.

I'm glad so many of you guys seem to do nothing but play defense. That keeps the long tubes for those of us who appreciate them.

I only have one 8 3/8" Model 27, a 27-2 that shipped between 1972 and 1974.

I love it and would like to find more!

At present, I only have one other 8 3/8" barreled gun, a Model 17-4 that shipped between 1978 and 1979. As stated above, I'm hoping to find more!

Have been collecting 8 3/8" S&W's for many years and have examples of most models. Still looking for 3 models that I do not have. Living in Ca. makes it a bit harder to find them but if you come across Models 617, 53, or 657I would be very interested.
