Value for 1920's M & P 38
Could someone provide a fair market value for a 1920's vintage M&P 38 5 inch in 95% condition....all original, matching. No box, standard service revolver, not a target model. Thanks, Ron

Most recent one I've bought was a 1920ish 4th model four inch in nickel with all matching SNs for $365 OTD but in less than 95% condition although probably 90+%. I would guess, without seeing the gun, $400-$500ish and maybe a little more if really nice. Pictures would help the knowledgeable folks here give you a much better estimate. Saw one at a LGS yesterday offered for $650 but that seemed pretty high to me. Good luck.

22hipower, Thanks for your input. The gun under question has an interesting police connection and is so marked. It also has the police officer's badge along with it to complete the package. Just trying to get an idea of fair market value for the package. Thanks again, Ron

Without pictures I would say a shooter grade would be $300. A better condition as far is appearance would be $400 tops. Without a box and papers the revolver goes down in value.

Sorry, but not able to do pix. As I said gun is at least 95% with only light holster wear at muzzle. Thanks for input thus far. Ron

It seems we all have our views on grading firearms. In my personal view, a revolver with minor muzzle wear would rate closer to 90% even if that. If the wear is noticeable to the eye without magnification, then it does not rate in the 95% category. (just my opinion) If it only has a turn-line on the cylinder, then a 95 to 98% rating.
I could be wrong and some seem to rate higher simply because the firearm is older. I rate my newer firearms as I do my older firearms.
Some seem to rate the firearm based upon only its condition, and some seem to rate based upon the package referring to original box, papers, tools and the gun.
In the picture (upper revolver), I would grade my old M&P from 1929 at 50 - 60%. I would grade the lower gun, also a newer M&P Model 10-5, from about 1972 at about a 70-80%. Neither have any of the packaging. Other folks may grade them out differently. I try to use the Blue Book grading pages as an example. I can't say I am all that proficient.
I think this is why many of us are reluctant to grade based upon hearsay without seeing the firearm or at the least numerous good quality pictures.

Police markings don't necessarily increase value, in fact some consider that they decrease it (like me). There are those who like to collect police revolvers which might attach a little premium to a police-marked revolver. Now if there is some interesting documented history connecting it to someone famous cop and/or involving some well-known shootout, that could be a different story. Not an appraisal of any sort, but I'd think it might bring +/- $400 in a private sale, plus the value of the badge.
