Those are just plain excellent! It seems to me that most of the factory Birdseye Maple grips I have seen are darker in color than the newer made ones. Would this be natural aging or not?
Kurac's roasted grips are similar.

The story.
Well I Moseyed up to the gun counter.......I figured you'd like I used that term. Spotted the grips......no really.... I didn't see the gun at all.
Saw the price tag.....950 bucks....thought geez how can I get this and remain alive. Put the gun back down and started driving home.
I called Kris/410 bore.....he would still talk to me back then.
He said get back there and get the gun the stupid grips are worth 600.
His words......not mine.... I can assure you.
Well I called the shop then and there with the I'll take it.
Then the wait Roy was very backed up at the time.
I was sure it was legit but the lack of those pesky N's left room for doubt.
It is 45 ACP Richard.....and came with those unrelieved stocks.
OOPS left out the part where it was there for over a week before I got it.
I'm also not thrilled they marked it dash 2 and not dash 1.....I'm sensitive that way

Here are a couple of the Birdseye Maples I own. I've included a pair of Tiger Stripe Maple Ropers. Their not Birdseye, I hope you don't mind.

Factory "J" Frame Birdseye Grips.

Yes they are factory. The gun was a special order (RP,W/O Target Trigger) and came with those grips, and a checkered pair of GA target grips. I bought the gun from a dealer in Conn. who had ordered it that way in the early 70's. I presently have put a pair of Farrant grips on the gun. This would be one of the last guns I would ever part with.

"K" Frame Plain Maple Special Target Grips (Been Posted Before)
My late friend Richard Lea, former service manager of the Smith&Wesson service department told me the factory had experimented with target grips being shaped at the bottom similar to the "J" frame style as some people didn't like the sharp edges found on all standard factory target grips. I also confirmed this with a friend who worked in the service department. I posted these before, and many thought I was wrong. These have black washers on the back and the screw escutcheons are recessed which means they were made sometime between 1968 and 1974. They are displayed on a 1970 17-3. There is absolutely no evidence these grips have been worked on outside the factory. The finish is perfect, and the grips are a perfect copy of the "J" frame target grip.

weatherby...The stocks on the 25-2 have the "old style" escutcheon and nut, but were shipped on the revolver in 1972. They are stamped on the underside just like the ones you posted.

Thanks....I find it interesting in that some of these stocks were either stored or held in reserve for quite a time.
Also wondering if any K target ones are known I don't recall seeing any

A pair of K-frame, non-relieved target stocks by S&W. Only pair I have seen. Also, two pairs by Keith Brown. The set on the left is darker wood overall than most birds eye maple.

After fine walnut Birdseye maple is probably my favorite wood. I've not yet lucked into a factory set but am always on the lookout. The Alvin White set is the top of the woodpile !

Found my first set of magna ones today.
They are K frame.
They seem a bit unusual to me as they have flush eschuetons but silver washers.
Had to see what they would look like on a gun

They seem a bit unusual to me as they have flush eschuetons but silver washers.

I'm in the process of building a Southern Mountain Rifle and had ordered a premium tiger striped maple instead of more period correct plain maple or cherry. I figured if I was going to build a beautiful rifle with a 46" swamped Rice barrel and all the other great pieces it might as well have an outstanding piece of wood wrapped around it. I wrote a note off to John about using the same process that has been used for centuries to bring out the grain of maple using "Aqua Fortis" or nitric acid and iron on a pair of grips in either bird's eye or tiger striped maple. He told me that the process he uses is roasting and he has gotten some good reports. I ordered up a pair of "Coke Profile" square butt N-framed grips from him and have been told it will be out to June before he is tooled up for that particular grip, I'm willing to wait.
