Questions About A Snub Nosed Military & Police
According to SCSW the change from round blade to ramp front sight happened circa 1952 and the upper sideplate screw was deleted circa 1955 . So would would you suspect the barrel has been changed. I know the grips are too new going to call the store tomorrow and see if they can check the serial numbers for me. Thoughts anyone ?

First, ask if the barrel SN matches that on the butt? If not it is definitely a replacement.

I know dates with changes are fuzzy and they would use up parts with no concern for what collectors would think 50 years down the road and as some have said never say never with Smith and Wesson.

Since you didn't mention a model number I presume the frame is not marked as a model 10. In that case isn't the hammer profile wrong for a mid-'50s specimen?
The gun angel on my shoulder isn't always right, but she's telling me that you should be wary of this one.

Regardless of what it may or may not be, it is suspicious and in crummy condition. I wouldn't advise making much of an investment in it.

It could be correct, note the middle one in this picture, it is a 4 screw dating to Sept 1957. The 5 screw at the top dates to Apr. 1952.
The second picture shows the front sight better.

Rough looking gun. I'd probably go $150 and use it for parts.

Checked on it today frame is a C prefix and barrel serial number does not match so yes at the price they are asking I will definitely pass.

And you have again demonstrated the truth of the old parable that you should always perform due diligence concerning any significant purchase to avoid the embarrassment and cost of becoming a sucker. It might be worth a couple hundred to someone as a shooter. It's not unknown for a longer barreled M&P to have been later converted to a snubby, and that is a distinct possibility here.

With the mismatched barrel/frame serial number later grips finish issues and a out the door price of $300 not a deal for me. I don't mind finish challenged guns as long as the price is right. The good thing is I am learning from you folks and for that I am grateful !
