Default Brazilian contract 1917

Hi Gang, I have had this .45 for quite a few years and don't shoot it much so I am thinking of trading it off. I would like to get an idea what these are worth. I don't know much about it except that it shoots really well and has been reblued at some point.

If someone with more knowledge than me can tell me more about it, I would appreciate it, thanks!

The refinish hurts it, bit they are gaining in popularity. I would say around $450-$550ish. There is one on Gunbroker for $650 bit it has been on for a long time.

I agree with deyomatic.

Nice 45!

That's a well done refinish. Unfortunately, though the refinisher didn't know how to blue the cylinder correctly since it's heat treated, hence doesn't match.

Yours appears to be a 1937 Brazilian contract issue, and I would advertise it that way. And right here in this forums classified section, no fees.

In 1937 S&W made some 25,000 1917s for Brazil, most in serial range 181983-207043 with exceptions as usual, using the late or post WW I produced flat top frame and sq notch rear sight, and these are marked with a “MADE IN U.S.A.” on right frame side with the S&W trademark on left side of frame. They also have a Brazilian Crest on the side plate dated 1937. These first contract Brazilian 1917s had commercial checkered grips with flat chrome plated medallions.

It has the advantages over most 1946 contract Brazilians of the side plate mounted safety hammer block, square notch improved rear sight w/flat top strap, and commercial stocks.
