Default M&P Airweight? Or Model 12?

I need some help from you Airweight experts.

There's an auction going on for what is billed as a four-screw M&P Airweight "pre-Model 12." But the serial number (C436xxx) seems to date it to 1960. I thought gun names were replaced with model numbers in 1957, in which case this should actually be a Model 12. Am I misunderstanding something? Or is the gun misadvertised? I am looking for a specific year so dating this one correctly matters to me.

Thanks,
Whisper

It should be well into the model stamped era; 1960 is a good guess if you are certain about the SN. I'd contact the seller for clarification or photos.

Many times folks add an extra X out of habit to a serial number. Not sure where C436XX would fall but could make the difference.

Other than that it just could be one of those really weird S&W serial number/shipping date issues.

This is a commonly believed fallacy. Model numbers did not replace model names, they were added. A M&P is an M&P and always will be, whether it is steel or aluminum framed.

Thanks, folks. Owner confirms serial number is correct and that gun has flat latch, steel cylinder, no model number. Unless someone has another theory I am going to conclude that this is an unmarked Model 12 from 1960.

Thanks again,
Whisper
