That box is absolutely drop dead mint. Almost looks too good to be real. The gun is beautiful as well but it looks like the stocks are replacements. Can't quite see a diamond in your photo but if there is none, then they are post 1968 replacements.

PM me the lot number on the box of ammo, and I can probably date it for you fairly precisely. A nice-condition full box of Remington ammo from that period in any caliber is a worthwhile find.

I'll trade OP three nice new semi jacketed hollowpoint plus P
boxes (an $80 value) just so he has something nice for that out of date gun.

I've had some pretty mint boxes before, but the OP's example is the nicest I've ever seen. I'm glad it belongs to a fellow NES guy.

Reviving an old thread here. What is a fair market price for the H/D shown in the first post? Correction it is a 1938 with full provenance.

Hard to tell for sure but it looks to me like the trigger and hammer are blued in the picture, if so the gun is refinished and wearing much newer grips so the gun is only a shooter grade gun if all that is true. I personally wouldnt pay more than $400 for it myself as a shooter. Also the gun would need to be checked to make sure the cylinder does not accept a 357 ctg. If refinished ots probably reemed out to 357. Just my humble opinion.

Among ammo collectors, that type of 1930s Remington box is called the "Dogbone" box. I have a near perfect full Dogbone box of .45 Auto-Rim (which in that caliber is considered uncommon), and a few not-so-perfect boxes of other calibers.

I’ve been watching the prices of the PW HD’s and they appear to be trending down over the last 6 or 8 months. A really nice boxed and lettered 5”, numbered magna gripped, blue PW HD just sold for $1,300 on Gun Broker. The box, PW magnas, and letter alone are worth that!
The same seller (very famous here on the forum) also had a very nice 4” PW HD sell for only $1,000.
I’m still shaking my head about that one.
And I absolutely stole a 6.5” Transition HD for one third of what it should have sold for.
So judging the gun from the original post, missing the correct stocks and refinished I’d say $450 to $500 tops.
That original box of ammo would probably sell for more than that!
I know I’d be interested.

Selling anything during a world wide pandemic is not going to bring you top money.
Nice box of 38/44 Dog Bone ammo. I found an identical box at a show last fall for $250. They are out there if you dig hard.

Here is a pic of a 1957 HD wearing the correct HD "diamond" magna stocks that were standard until 1968. This example is in 99% condition, all original.

I had a Mannlicher- Schoenauer carbine that came with a box of Western brand 8X56mm ammo from the 1930's.
The ammo fired okay, but I shot just a few rounds. I was able then to get DWM fresh ammo but don't think it's still imported.
The little rifle was pretty accurate off the bench at 100 yards, The double-set trigger made firing easy while holding steady.
But I guess you guys won't be firing any of that old .38 ammo...
It'd be interesting to see what velocity a chronograph would show.
