Default Help Pricing a .44 Magnum

I need a reasonable price for a professionally refinished, five-screw, four inch .44 Magnum without grips. I have no images but the refinish is excellent and the revolver looks new.
Thanks.

Which model? = pre-29, 29, 29-x? Refinished condition cuts value substantially - blued or nickeled?. Are you buying or selling?

Rick, I would put the value around $800 to $1,000. A refinished 44 Magnum has little value to a collector. Things that would add to the value would be the proper stocks (Cokes +$400 to $600), presentation case with tools (+$700 to $1,500) or unusual features like non-standard barrel length, sight configuration, etc.

Honestly, the worst thing you can do for resale value on an old S&W is to refinish it.

One guy's opinion, but I hope you find it helpful.

The refinish takes it out of the realm of "collectible" and drops it into the shooter category. I would think that you are looking at somewhere around $1,000 give or take $100 or so. As DWalt stated, also depends on what vintage. Earlier guns usually bring more than ones made yesterday.

It's blued and with 5 screws, as I'm sure you know, it's clearly a pre-29.

Not to be too mysterious but we gave the .44 to a company for consideration that we never received. Now we're in the process of negotiating the value of the .44 Magnum. The serial number is #1787XX.

A lot of .44 Magnums were not shot very much, but some were. Check for signs of looseness. The one you are looking at will have value as a shooter only, but does not have the engineering changes ("endurance package", etc.) that have been introduced over the years. Since it was refinished, you'd have to think it has seen a fair amount of use.

So inspect it carefully for signs of looseness and wear. In any case, I would not expect it to stand up to full-power loads as well as later versions.

Furthermore, the four inch barrel may be popular but will give more blast and flash with full-power loads than longer barreled .44 Magnums.

I would think long and hard about buying a "shooter-only" .44 Magnum that I wouldn't want to shoot much.

Of course, it's your money and you may really like it and / or be perfectly happy to shoot mainly light loads. Perhaps you could use an argument along these lines to negotiate a lower price. Your money, your choice.

The SN would make it a late pre-29, ca. late 1958. Sight unseen, and lacking any other information about it, I'd say that as a shooter, $600.

Sorry, I need to amend my guesstimate. I forgot about the missing stocks. I had said $1,000 plus or minus $100. Without original wood and refinished, I would drop that to $800 plus or minus $100.

I use the plus or minus factor because there is no exact number for these guns. Sold locally with no auction pressure you will normally see less. Placed on one of the big online auction sites with the added auction fever of not wanting to be outbid for $50, the prices are typically greater.

Hope that helps.

My advice was predicated on the assumption that you were interested in making a purchase. Now I see you are involved in some sort of "mysterious" negotiation regarding something you, your family, or your company already own(?) Sounds like you may need to seek a legal remedy.

Lots of good luck with that.
