Wow you are getting close to narrowing it down less than a hundred separating the two groups. Just noticed you have a flyer with serial number 19155.

19155 may be a replaced barrel. with an earlier one. Or, its possible that the factory found an earlier barrel lying around, and used it . I also recognize that we have a very small sample, and with a lot more guns, we might find anomalies, although I doubt that there are a whole lot more survivors.

Thanks for the information on 15031. I added it to the file.

Default 1899 serial numbers

I have three 1899 S&W. Here are the serial numbers for them and if they have the roll marks on the barrels. The first is serial # 7676 and it is blued. It does not have any barrel marks about cartridge. The second is serial #5256. It is currently nickel finished and is not barrel marked for cartridge either. I am a little confused on this one as it is in the range for the Navy issued ones and is nickel plated. The serial # for it is in the same place as the Army issued one I have and not on the bottom of the grip, bt on the front side of the grip. Behind the cylinder yoke is another number which is 3328 and below it is an outlined star with the capital letter "I" in the middle of it. I am wondering if someone altered it at some time. The last one I just purchased about a month ago is serial #13552 and it is an Army issued one and the barrel is roll marked S&W 38 MIL. The 38 Special cartridge will NOT fit in the cylinder and we are looking into it. So not sure if it was chambered for the 38 Long Colt or what. Hope that helps with your research on the barrel markings and all. I can send pictures later if you would like.

I have a question about the Army issued 1899. The one I recently purchased has the lanyard stud still on it, but it is missing the lanyard ring itself. Is it the same as the ones on the Victory and 1917 models, or is it unique to this issue?

Mine is #3371 with NO caliber roll marking on the side of the barrel.

Sure wish I could find a cylinder stop to make it shootable again.

God Bless, Louis

1899 Navy : 5779 NO caliber Roll Stamp
1899 Army : 10394 Roll stamp: S&W 38 MIL
1902 Navy: 25989 Roll stamp: S&W 38 MIL

Mike,

I have had these for the past 25 years. All of them came from Dr. Parker (Perry, FL) who had them stashed from near WWII era or prior.

So, these, likely this is the first time these SNs have publicly "surfaced".

Of the Navy Contract revolvers does anyone have any with British commercial proof marks or British military markings?
I am tying to locate any that were part of the 500 revolver shipment released by the U.S. Navy and sent to the UK in July 1940 as part of the $37 million purchase through the U.S. Steel Corp shipment.

AD, You should start your own thread, as this one has nothing in common with your question.

I have an 1899 from the Navy contract, SN 5208. No caliber roll mark on the barrel. The Navy no. is 206. It has British commercial proof marks for the .38-200 Briticsh cartridge and is stamped on the right side of the barrel ".38 .710 4 tons" and the chambers have been reamed to accept .38 S&W cartridges. Both the barrel and the cylinder have stamped stars enclosing a capitol I. The gun has been refinished, so some markings are faint.

It's a little surprising to find an 1899 rechambered to accept the .380 cartridge, but it is well-known that the British did that to other revolvers originally chambered in .38 Special they came into by various ways during WWII, so as to allow the use of the standard British military round.

That brings the gap closer only 61 serial numbers between the two types.

Mike and all;

My US Army Model 1899 is serial number 13030 (on forestrap), and has S & W 38 MIL stamp on left side bbl.

Thanks for the study, I haven't Lettered mine yet but intend on doing so soon just to see what info is out there officially on the old "1st Model Hand Ejectors".

The gap is closing, as you note. I had always expected that there would be a transition
somewhere, meaning that there would be some serial numbers that do not fit the pattern perfectly. We know that the revolvers were not made, or shipped, in serial number order.

In this case, either its 7546 & 7583, or its 7676. Its perhaps possible that the caliber roll marking was implemented as of a shipping date. If that were the case, then we would see a good alignment based on shipping date.

7676: I believe the barrel on this revolver has been replaced, and probably with one
that has no caliber marking. The gun has a date stamp of 12.21.28 on the
rear grip strap, and is also stamped <B> on the bottom of the grip frame.
Additionally the flat under the barrel is stamped <B>. Most importantly, the
serial number on the flat under the barrel is stamped with a much-later set of
number stamps, and is stamped backwards. The 1899 ( and later) barrel serial
numbers were stamped so that it is read from left to right with the barrel pointing
to the right, and with the first digit of the serial number closest to the frame.
The serial number on this barrel is stamped upside-down, so that the barrel
must be pointed to the left, in order to be readable. In this orientation, the
last digit of the serial number is closest to the frame. For these reasons, I have
removed the revolver from the survey. The owner has sent me pictures
documenting these stampings.

Thanks for your help, Mike Priwer

1903: The caliber-marked barrel on this revolver has been replaced. It has a large O (circle) stamped on the flat under the barrel, next to the frame face. The serial number is stamped with the barrel pointing to the left; pointing to the right makes it upside-down.

Crp254

Would you check to see what is stamped on the flat, under the barrel ? And, which way does the barrel point, in order for the serial number to be right-side up ?

Thanks, Mike Priwer

HI, Mike. I picked up 2 at Lakeland this past weekend. While neither are in great condition, I felt it my duty to rescue them just because I haven't seen any of the U.S. Army or U.S. Navy up for sale in a dog's age, and the price was fair enough.

1899 U.S. Army SN 13608 .38 S&W MIL
1902 U.S. Navy SN: 25473 .38 S&W MIL

NOTE: All serial number match on each. SN on front grip strap, face of cylinder and underside of barrel.

Additionally the flat under the barrel is stamped <B>. Most importantly, the

The serial number on this barrel is stamped upside-down, so that the barrel
must be pointed to the left, in order to be readable. In this orientation, the
last digit of the serial number is closest to the frame. For these reasons, I have
removed the revolver from the survey. The owner has sent me pictures
documenting these stampings.
